Chock Chapple Talks Life After ‘The Golden Bachelorette’ and His Future with Joan

Wichita’s own Chock Chapple, a businessman and insurance executive, became a household name when he appeared on ABC’s The Golden Bachelorette. As the show’s winner, he got engaged to Joan Vassos in a heartwarming season finale, but now the couple faces a challenge: while Chapple lives in Wichita, Joan is based in Maryland, and the pair is currently apartment hunting in New York City.

Chapple recently sat down with KMUW’s Rose Conlon to share his experience of being on the show, his plans with Joan, and the reality of navigating a relationship that’s now in the public eye. Here’s an edited transcript of their conversation:

The Unexpected Journey to Reality TV

Chapple’s entrance into reality television was unplanned—his daughter signed him up for The Golden Bachelorette without his prior knowledge. “I had no idea what I was getting into,” he admits. After a two-month casting process, he found himself in Los Angeles, stepping into the world of reality TV. “I show up, and they whisk me into a hotel room, and a couple of days later, I’m in this big production facility. And I’m thinking, ‘This is starting!’”

A Connection That Grew Naturally

While Chapple and Joan’s connection seemed undeniable on-screen, he admits he wasn’t sure where he stood. “Some guys came back from dates glowing and saying things like, ‘This was just incredible,’ and in my head, I was thinking, ‘Maybe these guys have a stronger connection with Joan.’”

For Chapple, the experience of falling in love on a dating show for older contestants was meaningful. “You’re never too old to fall in love,” he says. “I didn’t expect this connection with Joan. It just happened naturally.”

Handling Criticism and Group Dynamics

Throughout the season, Chapple had his fair share of tension with other contestants, particularly during a group date. Some felt he was monopolizing Joan’s time, but Chapple brushes off the criticism. “I don’t really read the comments,” he says. “There are people who love you, and people who don’t. The reality is, it’s a competitive environment, and emotions run high.”

Chapple also shared that contestant Jonathan Rone helped him understand the dynamics, saying, “This was the first time we saw Joan with somebody that really was a couple.”

A Special Hometown Date

Chapple’s hometown date was particularly meaningful. He brought Joan to his friend Roger Schofield’s ranch in Butler County, where they planted a tree in memory of his late mother. Chapple, who grew up in Garden Plain, a small farming community near Wichita, wanted to showcase the area to Joan. “It was just a blessing to have that opportunity to represent Wichita,” he reflects.

Planning the Future: New York, Wichita, and Maryland

Chapple and Joan’s future together is still being mapped out. While they are both excited about their engagement, they are also realistic about the challenges ahead. “We’re still apartment hunting in New York City,” Chapple says. “We’ve talked about splitting time between Wichita, Maryland, and New York, but it’s going to take some effort.”

They plan to spend the holidays with their families—Joan will visit Wichita, while Chapple will go to Maryland. Afterward, they plan to sit down and map out a more permanent plan.

Favorite Wichita Spots

Chapple is eager to share some of his favorite local spots with Joan. “Saigon is my favorite. I’ve been going there for over 35 years,” he says. He also looks forward to taking her to Chesters Chophouse & Wine Bar, a local favorite for steaks, though Joan beat him to the punch. “We found out she was already there, and we had to wait until she left!” he laughs.

Support from Family, Friends, and Colleagues

Chapple’s family, friends, and coworkers have been incredibly supportive throughout the entire process. “My employees were all watching, trying to figure out what was happening,” he shares. “But the people in my life have been amazing.”
