The cast of Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story have teased that the prequel will be a more intimate show than Bridgerton itself – but not in the way you think.
The series depicts the life of a young Charlotte (India Amarteifio), as her rise to power and marriage to King George spark “both a great love story and a societal shift”.
While Bridgerton is known and loved for its steamy scenes – and Amarteifio has assured us that Queen Charlotte will show romance in all its forms – the stars of the spinoff say that Charlotte and George’s epic love story is more intimate than any sex scene.
Golda Rosheuvel, who reprises her role as Queen Charlotte, spoke to Digital Spy and other press about some of the differences between the prequel and Bridgerton.
Admist the chaos of “wrangling” Charlotte’s fifteen children, the actress explained how the “relationship with Charlotte and George is still there,” which she says is “really beautiful”.
“It was really interesting because we kind of overlapped,” she continued. “Sometimes [the younger characters] would be in in the morning and we’d be in in the afternoon. India and I would kind of high-five in the corridor and pass the baton in George and Charlotte’s relationship.
“To have the air of the younger characters there on set as myself and James [Fleet] were coming in was really interesting and really beautiful to absorb and take that on.”
Lady Danbury actress Adjoa Andoh also weighed in, explaining how Queen Charlotte adds more depth to the characters, which in itself is more intimate.
“There was less structure of who’s with whom and what’s happening,” she shared. “It was more about how you responded to those circumstances and more intimate scenes and a sort of cross fertilization.
“There’s an enriching of who you are in Bridgerton because of some of the stuff that we experience in Queen Charlotte, and I hope that the audience will feel that enrichment. It’s a sort of virtuous circle in a way.”
But when asked just how steamy the show would be, Amarteifio stressed that Charlotte and George have fifteen children – and there’s only one way that can happen.
“They go on to have 15 children, so that is how that kind of works,” she said. “Well I think 13 of them [survive] to adulthood. So expect to see romance in all forms, is where I’ll leave it.”
Corey Mylchreest, who plays young King George, added: “All of those scenes are incredible in the same way that the dance scenes are incredible.
“They all mean something, they’re all very in tune with progressing the story and so none of them are gratuitous [It’s driven by storyline].”
