What the ‘Blue Bloods’ Cast Has Said About a Potential Spinoff Series After Filming Season 14
Is a Blue Bloods spinoff show around the corner? While nothing has officially been announced, the show’s cast and crew have not shied away from discussing the desire to keep the franchise growing.
Season 14 of Blue Bloods will be the show’s last, marking the end for the beloved Reagan family, led by Tom Selleck’s Frank Reagan.
“I’m kind of frustrated,” Tom told TV Insider about the show ending. “During those last eight shows, I haven’t wanted to talk about an ending for Blue Bloods but about it still being wildly successful.”
Closer shares everything the Blue Bloods cast has said about a possible spinoff.
Donnie Wahlberg Is Open to It
Donnie Wahlberg, who portrayed Danny Reagan on the show, addressed the topic of a potential spinoff.
“There’s been a lot of talk about spinoffs, about various spinoffs, all types of concepts of spinoffs. I, for me personally, would say whatever happens next, if it’s done with the spirit of Blue Bloods and done with the care that we tried to put into Blue Bloods every week, it would be something that I would look forward to watching or being a part of either way,” he told TV Insider in October 2024. “I’ve heard stories of prequels, sequels, you name it. For me personally, I love the show. I’ve enjoyed working on it for 14 years and like I said, whatever comes next, as long as it has family at its core and the spirit of Blue Bloods, then I’m all for it.”
Donnie Isn’t Ruling Anything Out
“There’s a final season of Blue Bloods still to air, so I’m looking forward to watching those episodes with all of my incredible fans of the show and tweeting with them every Friday night for every final episode,” Donnie said ahead of the second half of season 14 airing. “And I think after that, we’ll see what happens next. Spinoffs, sequels, it’s all good to me. I think what I do know is there are millions of people who love this show and want it to continue somehow some way. And if there’s a way that we can give them some extension of Blue Bloods, then great. I have nothing more to offer than that, but I will be enjoying the final eight episodes with the fans. That’s my priority right now.”
A Sad Update
CBS Studios President David Stapf opened up about whether or not a Blue Bloods spinoff was a possibility.
“We don’t have anything that’s going to be in development soon but it’s a brand, a title and a show that is beloved,” he told Deadline in July 2024. “We’ve got to get it right so we’re taking our time and trying to figure it out, okay, what is the next iteration of Blue Bloods? We have a whole season to go where we intend to celebrate it all season long as to how good that show is, so there’s still time for us to figure that out.”
Tom Selleck Was Holding Out Hope
Tom also previously voiced his hopes that CBS would decide to keep the show going. However, this never ended up coming to fruition.
“I will continue to think that CBS will come to their senses,” he told CBS News in May 2024. “We’re the third-highest scripted show in all of broadcast. We’re winning the night. All the cast wants to come back. And I can tell you this: we aren’t sliding off down a cliff. We’re doing good shows, and still holding our place.”
“I don’t want to spin off right now, this is very fresh for me and I’m still grieving because we all wanted to continue, this is not something any of us wanted.
Abigail Hawk’s Genuine Reaction
Blue Bloods cast member Abigail Hawk admitted that the idea of a spinoff so soon after season 14 wasn’t at the top of her list.
“I don’t want to spin off right now, this is very fresh for me and I’m still grieving because we all wanted to continue, this is not something any of us wanted,” she told Hello! Magazine in October 2024.
“We felt that there was so much more we could continue telling and sharing and creating, but I do think there are certain characters that could continue to have quite an amazing and interesting life beyond the world with the Reagans, and I think Abigail Baker is one of them.
