Netflix’s fan-favorite romantic drama Virgin River returned for its seventh season on Thursday, March 13, ending with one of the most emotional cliffhangers yet for the show’s beloved couple, Mel Monroe (Alexandra Breckenridge) and Jack Sheridan (Martin Henderson).
Virgin River follows Mel, a nurse practitioner who moves to a small town in Northern California and falls in love with Jack, the local bar owner. After finally getting married in Season 6, Mel and Jack start a new chapter in Season 7 as they get ready to become parents.
By the end of the season, Mel and Jack’s dream of having a family seems close to coming true. Marley, one of Mel’s patients, gives birth to a baby boy and plans to place for adoption with the couple. But the exciting moment quickly becomes a medical emergency when doctors find out the baby has a serious heart condition that will need several surgeries.
But there’s hope. There’s a specialist who can treat the baby’s condition, but they’re located in Mel’s old hometown of Los Angeles. In the final moments of the episode, Mel and Jack climb into an ambulance transporting their newborn son to the NICU, where he’ll be treated by one of the country’s top pediatric heart surgeons, who also happens to be Mel’s ex.

Will There Be A Virgin River Season 8?

Yes! Netflix renewed Virgin River for an eighth season in July 2025. The upcoming chapter will have 10 episodes, with filming set to start on April 22, 2026, in Vancouver and finish in early August, according to Deadline.
What Will Virgin River Season 8 Be About?

Season 8 will pick up four months after the end of Season 7. “We’ll start with a four-month time jump,” showrunner Patrick Sean Smith told Deadline. He also said there are no plans for Season 8 to be the last season of the show.
The next chapter will also reveal the outcome of Mel and Jack’s baby’s surgery. Smith told Netflix’s site Tudum that Season 8 will focus on “the challenges that raising a child with special physical needs puts on their marriage and how challenging it is to be new parents, much less new parents in such a high-stakes situation.”
Meanwhile, Breckenridge said she hopes the challenges of parenthood don’t overwhelm Mel and Jack. “I’m hoping that at some point they get to some kind of normalcy,” she told Netflix. “I’d love for Mel to be doing some gardening and cooking.”
In Season 8, Denny will be “going through the application process and interviews” for medical school after getting his MCAT scores, Smith told Deadline. The show will also explore a new relationship for Muriel with someone “who might be a little close to Mel,” Smith said, confirming that it’s Everett.
Smith continued that the next season will explore themes like feeling haunted by the past, sacrifice, and rebirth, as Jack works to get the farm running and life follows its natural cycles.
Which Cast Members Are Leaving Virgin River Season 8?

The biggest news about Season 8 so far revolves around its cast. Marco Grazzini and Lauren Hammersley will not return for the next season, Deadline confirmed. Grazzini, who joined in Season 3, plays Mike Valenzuela, a police officer who helps Brie find Charmaine. Lauren Hammersley’s character Charmaine Roberts joined in 2019.
Smith told the publication that although the stars are leaving, they could return in a future season.
“For me, I’m just trying to look to the longevity of the show and making sure that the characters that we’re keeping have enough story engine in them to keep going,” the showrunner said. “So I can’t say there are any specific cast shakeups planned, but I think we will have to start to — as characters run their course — make some decisions and bring in some new blood.”

Netflix has not announced a release date for Virgin River Season 8 yet. It’s still early, since Season 7 episodes were just released on Thursday, March 12, 2026.
The good news is that fans probably won’t have to wait long. With filming starting next month, new episodes will likely be released in early-to-mid 2027. Since 2019, Netflix has dropped a new season of Virgin River every year, so Season 8 will likely follow the same pattern.
