Although Chicago Fire season 13 didn’t end on many cliffhangers, one character whose storyline appears wrapped up still deserves to return. The show’s large ensemble cast means every character plays a vital role. Viewers notice when someone like Violet or Novak is gone for even one episode, or when Carver vanishes just after returning from leave. Fortunately, most of the familiar faces appeared in the season finale — though a few absences and unresolved stories stood out.
While fans were already prepared for Carver and Ritter’s exits before the finale aired, the way their departures were handled (or not handled) left something to be desired. There was no big moment, no closure — not even a clear sendoff. Their fates remain vague heading into season 14. But another character, who technically got a resolution, shouldn’t be written off just yet.
Natalie Evans’ Story Wrapped Up in the Finale — But Her Presence Still Matters
Natalie Evans’ storyline seemed to reach its conclusion in the season 13 finale. After Stella Kidd has a heartfelt conversation with Natalie’s sister, Julia, we see them reconnect and prepare to leave Kidd and Severide’s home. Julia even jokes about buying Natalie better clothes, lightening the emotional goodbye. Throughout the season, Stella had been trying to reunite Natalie with family who could take care of her — and it looks like that mission was accomplished.
Natalie’s previous behavioral issues — smoking during Girls on Fire training, skipping school, and acting out — were largely rooted in feeling abandoned. Now that she’s reconnected with her sister, there’s no immediate reason for Stella and Kelly to stay involved. That might come as a relief to the couple, especially with a baby on the way, but the show would be making a mistake by cutting Natalie off completely.
Natalie Evans Should Still Be Part of Season 14 — Even in a Smaller Role
Despite all the trouble she caused — falsely accusing her sister of arson, manipulating Stella and Severide, and generally acting out — Natalie had a major emotional impact on both characters, especially Stella. At times, she felt like a stand-in daughter, particularly after Stella and Kelly’s adoption plans fell through. Now, with Stella expecting a child, the lessons and emotions tied to Natalie’s presence become even more relevant.
Stella once saved Natalie from a burning building a decade ago, and that shared history is powerful. Their road trip conversation reminded viewers just how deep that bond runs. Even a small appearance in season 14 — like an update that Natalie rejoined Girls on Fire — would offer continuity and emotional payoff. It’s a subtle but important way to reflect how saving someone can ripple through your life.
Natalie Still Has a Role to Play in Kidd’s Journey to Motherhood
Now that Kidd and Severide are expecting, it might seem like Natalie’s purpose in their lives is over. But that’s not necessarily true. Raising a child comes with anxiety and doubt — and the experience of mentoring Natalie could help both Stella and Kelly feel more confident in their future as parents.
Julia won’t become the perfect guardian overnight. There’s a good chance that she’ll struggle, and Kidd and Severide stepping in from time to time could be both realistic and meaningful. Helping Natalie and Julia now could provide emotional insight into their own parenting journey — something that could deepen their storylines heading into the next chapter of Chicago Fire.
