In an unexpected twist, Young Sheldon‘s most controversial character is returning in Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage. Like The Big Bang Theory, its prequel didn’t really have a clear villain. Everyone was given their time under the spotlight, and while some of them were prone to make mistakes or behave badly, each character had their redeeming moment at the end of the day. That said, some players proved to be more divisive, especially as their actions impacted the overall state of the Cooper family. Intriguingly, one of them is expected to join CBS’ Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage.
Taking it to her official Instagram account, Meemaw actor Annie Potts effectively reveals that Melissa Peterman will return for Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage as Brenda Sparks. Check out the image below:
In the image, Potts is seen hanging out with Rachel Bay Jones, who plays Mandy’s mother, Audrey McAllister, and Peterman. She shares additional context in the caption, writing that they took the photo while they were on a break filming Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, and were hanging out at Warner Bros.’ rose garden.
Why Brenda Sparks Returns In Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage
Brenda Is Still Mary And Missy’s Neighbor In Medford
The bigger problem came when the prequel floated the idea of George and Brenda having an affair — sticking to Sheldon’s story about his dad being unfaithful in The Big Bang Theory.
Officially, only three characters from Young Sheldon are set to return for the follow-up series outside its lead stars. Meemaw and Mary are in the pilot, although Zoe Perry wasn’t in the Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage live filming. Subsequently, Raegan Revord will reprise her role as Missy in episode 2. There is no word yet on if or when Iain Armitage will also come back as Sheldon, but the writers are actively working on finding ways to feature the boy genius despite his move to California. In any case, all of these characters have clear reasons to return, but not Brenda.
Sheldon’s family had a complicated relationship with Brenda. Initially, she was extremely judgmental of Mary and how she was raising Sheldon. The bigger problem came when the prequel floated the idea of George and Brenda having an affair — sticking to Sheldon’s story about his dad being unfaithful in The Big Bang Theory. Eventually, Young Sheldon retconned George’s cheating scandal, somehow fixing her relationship with Mary. This could be the reason for her return, as she helped the family get over George’s death. She may have closely watched Mary quietly deal with her grief, prompting her to reach out to Georgie.
McKenna Grace and Raegan Revord reunited for the first time since Young Sheldon, and it highlights the most overlooked tragedy tied to George’s death.
Assuming that this is the case, then the pilot for Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage can function as an epilogue to Young Sheldon, as it continues to tackle the aftermath of George’s death. It’s interesting how the show will handle a more dramatic storyline, especially as it shifts to a multi-cam set-up. However, it only makes sense that it acknowledges what happened to the Coopers as it’s essentially a spinoff sequel.
