The actress says she and the cast “were totally ambushed by” the CBS pulling the plug on the show – claiming it was made as a “business decision”
Annie Potts says she felt blindsided by CBS canceling Young Sheldon. Annie plays Connie “MeeMaw” Tucker on the TV show and says she doesn’t understand the network’s decision to end the series, since it still performs well in terms of rating seven seasons in.
“I still don’t understand why they canceled it,” the actress said in an interview with Variety. “It just seemed like such a stupid business move.”
TV series cancelations happen all of the time in Hollywood and actors have come to expect it, but when it comes to this show, Annie did not see it coming. “This one was especially hard because I was completely unprepared,” she said. “I was shocked. I mean, the No. 1 show on network TV, No. 1 on Netflix. We’re, I think, all that people watch on TikTok besides a couple of recipes for pasta. It just seemed like such a stupid business move.”
“Forgive me, but I don’t know,” she added. “If a show is starting to drag or lag or have a lack of stories or whatever, then you kind of see it coming. We were totally ambushed by this.”
Iain Armitage, who plays young Sheldon, shared his thoughts on the show coming to an end as well, saying that he thought they “could have done a lot more” with the sitcom. “I totally get what Annie means,” he said. “It’s also just hard in a really weird way that I can only really see if I step back and try and take a global view, which is hard. I mean, I’m not going to get to see Annie Potts every day. This is a real loss for me. More than anyone.”
CBS announced the news in November that The Big Bang Theory prequel would come to an end with season seven. “Being able to tell the origin of Sheldon Cooper, and expanding the story to include the entire Cooper family has been a wonderful experience,” executive producers Steve Holland, Steven Molaro, and Chuck Lorre said in a statement at the time. “We are grateful to our fans for embracing this chapter of the Coopers these past six seasons, and on behalf of the entire Young Sheldon family, we’re excited to share this final season with you.”
The final episode of Young Sheldon will air on May 16.
