CBS releases the Young Sheldon season 7, episode 9 trailer, confirming the return of the show’s biggest missing character in its final year.
A Young Sheldon season 7, episode 9 trailer confirms the return of its biggest missing character. As Sheldon’s time in Medford nears its end, the Coopers’ collective story is also crawling to its organic finale. While Georgie and Mandy will technically continue Young Sheldon via their spinoff show, the rest of the family won’t be there to be part of the next chapter of their lives. Given this, the writers are scrambling to ensure that Young Sheldon season 7 wraps up the clan’s Medford story, and that includes bringing back familiar faces from its past who have played big roles in Sheldon’s life.
CBS (via TV Promos) has released the official trailer for Young Sheldon season 7, episode 9, “A Fancy Article and a Scholarship for a Baby,” and it features the return of Wallace Shawn’s Dr. Sturgis. Watch the video below:
In the episode, Sheldon starts to weigh his post-grad options. The Big Bang Theory already spoiled that he would eventually go to Caltech, but that doesn’t mean that seeing his decision-making process wouldn’t be fun. Sturgis’ return after missing most of Young Sheldon season 7, however, suggests that he will have a say in the matter.
Why Young Sheldon Season 7 Needed To Bring Back Sturgis
The Big Bang Theory Totally Ignored Him
Much like the majority of characters in Young Sheldon outside the Coopers, Sturgis neither appeared nor was mentioned in The Big Bang Theory. There is no narrative explanation for this, but ever since it became clear that he was integral in paving the way for Sheldon’s academic future, there has been an urgency from viewers to learn why the socially inept genius never brought him up when talking about his childhood in Texas. Now, it’s up to Young Sheldon to fill the narrative gaps left by its parent series when it comes to the beloved character.
Considering how impactful Sturgis has been as Sheldon’s first mentor, it’s mandatory that Young Sheldon finds a way to explain his absence in The Big Bang Theory. Beyond that, it also lies in the prequel to make up for the lack of credit he got for shaping Sheldon’s mind. While the Coopers didn’t attend the Nobel Prize ceremony in The Big Bang Theory finale, at least Sheldon thanked them in his acceptance speech. Meanwhile, Sturgis was not mentioned at all, although he was arguably the most supportive of his academic pursuits.
It’s uncertain how prominent Sturgis will be in the remaining episodes of Young Sheldon. That being said, behind-the-scenes set images of George’s supposed funeral confirm that he will have at least one more appearance beyond episode 9. After the prequel, that will likely be the end of the road for the character on TV, as it’s unlikely that he will be involved in Georgie and Mandy’s spinoff.
