“You know him as Ricky Ricardo. But Desi Arnaz was the boss behind the curtain.”

Desi Arnaz might be best remembered for yelling, “Lucy, you got some ’splaining to do!” — but behind the scenes, he was the quiet force powering the success of I Love Lucy. As executive producer and co-founder of Desilu Productions, Arnaz was a business innovator who helped invent the three-camera sitcom format and introduced the concept of reruns. Without him, modern TV might look very different.

Arnaz also broke barriers for Latinos in entertainment. As a Cuban-born immigrant in the 1950s, he faced racism and prejudice, but still managed to build one of the most successful shows of all time. His chemistry with Lucille Ball was electric — both as a comedy duo and a real-life married couple — and their on-screen relationship gave the world something it hadn’t seen before: humor mixed with heart, and culture mixed with courage.

Desi Arnaz was more than Lucy’s straight man. He was a visionary.
