Yellowstone’s Surprise Comeback: The Show Rises Again as Final Season Sparks Debate

Yellowstone premiered back in 2018, quickly establishing itself as the latest pop culture phenomenon thanks to its expansive setting, sprawling story, and tense, tight writing. The series starred Kevin Costner as John Dutton III, the patriarch of the Dutton family who own and manage vast swathes of ranch land. Yellowstone‘s leading ensemble cast included Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton, Wes Bentley as Jamie Dutton, Kelly Reilly as Beth Dutton, and Cole Hauser as Rip Wheeler, the latter two of whom are expected be leading their own hotly-anticipated spinoff series.

Apart from the main series, the Yellowstone universe has been expanded through numerous prequel series, namely 2021’s 1883 and 2022’s 1923, each of which charts the lives of its respective generation of the Dutton family. Yellowstone fans can also look forward to multiple new shows in the coming years, ranging from follow-ups to standing prequels and entirely new stories set in the present. On top of Rip and Beth’s spinoff starring Cole Hauser and Kelly Reilly, Luke Grimes is slated to return as Kayce Dutton for Y: Marshals, expected to premiere sometime in 2026, while 2025 should be marking the premiere of The Madison, which will shift the series’ focus from the Duttons to the McIntosh family, who move to Montana from New York City.

How Did the Stars of Yellowstone Respond to the Series’ Coming to a Close?

Following the end of Yellowstone in late 2024, Hauser opened up about the impact of the series and his hopes for the future. “There’s obviously just tons of people that every Sunday get together with their families, and we give them the experience of taking ’em out of their own living rooms and putting ’em in Montana and entertaining them,” Hauser said of the show’s overwhelming popularity. “We will see what happens over the next year or so and we’ll see what’s next. Hopefully, we can continue to get in people’s living rooms and entertain them the way we have over the last seven years.” Hauser added, “For me, to be able to do that, to educate people, enlighten and entertain them is always the dream.”
