Yellowstone’s CBS Spinoff Just Cast Its First Star — And Fans Are Losing It!

Kayce’s Yellowstone spinoff has added its first new character. First announced in March, the latest chapter in the Yellowstone franchise will see Luke Grimes’ Kayce Dutton take the spotlight for his own show on CBS. It’ll center on Kayce’s life in the military, taking him away from the familiar trappings of the Yellowstone ranch.

Titled Y: Marshals, and set to debut on CBS next year, the spinoff picks up after Yellowstone season 5, with Kayce’s time at the titular Yellowstone Ranch behind him. Kayce then puts his combination of U.S. Marshals and cowboy skills together when he joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals.

Variety confirms that Logan Marshall-Green (UpgradeSpider-Man: Homecoming) has been cast in Y: Marshals. He’ll play Pete Calvin, a friend from Kayce’s time in the military.

What This Means For Kayce’s Yellowstone Spinoff

Marshall-Green, who recently recurred on …And Just Like That, will next be seen in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. His long list of film credits includes The InvitationHow It EndsDevilThe Sound of SilenceIntrusion, and Lou. He brings a lot of experience to Y: Marshals, having broken out with a recurring role on the early 2000s teen drama The OC.

The spinoff is produced by MTV Entertainment Studios and executive produced by Taylor Sheridan and David C. Glasser for 101 Studios alongside John Linson, Art Linson, Spencer Hudnut, Luke Grimes, Ron Burkle, David Hutkin, and Bob Yari.

Kayce’s spinoff will see the Luke Grimes character bring range justice to Montana. Along with his teammates, he’ll have to balance family, duty, and the cost that comes with the high-risk jobs that they chose to do. There will likely be more casting news about the upcoming CBS drama in the next few weeks, including any Yellowstone characters that might join Kayce.

Hudnut, who previously worked on the CBS and Paramount+ drama SEAL Team, will also serve as showrunner. It may remind viewers of that show, which explored similar themes. But with the familiarity of Kayce and Marshall-Green, who achieved a new level of recognition with the cult favorite Leigh Whannell film Upgrade, the spinoff will feel immediately different in terms of performance.

Along with the Beth and Rip spinoff, which is planned for Paramount+, the Yellowstone spinoffs will have a tough time capturing the audience and moving on from the death of John Dutton. But, even allowing for that difficulty, strong casting makes a significant difference. Y: Marshals is more intriguing with the addition of Marshall-Green.
