Kelly Reilly, star of Yellowstone, recently described her scenes with co-star Wes Bentley as “pretty brutal.”
Taking a step back from her tough-as-nails character, Beth Dutton, Kelly shared some empathetic views on her on-screen brother, Jamie Dutton.
She hinted that perhaps Jamie deserves a bit of redemption.
Kelly’s feelings might not align with the views of many fans, especially given Jamie and Beth’s complicated, and potentially deadly, rivalry.
But a deeper look into Taylor Sheridan’s series suggests there might be some merit to her sentiments.
Yellowstone is known for its complex characters, who often embody both dark and light traits, making it understandable why Kelly might feel empathy towards Jamie.
Jamie is a character caught in a constant struggle between his ethical convictions and his ambitions.
Kelly, in a discussion with Entertainment Tonight, expressed how challenging it was to portray the intense dynamics between Beth and Jamie.
“They’re so filled with pain, so they’re pretty brutal,” Kelly said of her scenes with Wes.
Kelly then explained how emotionally taxing these performances can be.
“It’s hard to talk about it honestly, because when I’m playing her I’m full in… and then I watch it and I don’t even remember doing some of the scenes. I feel really bad for Jamie sometimes,” she revealed.
Yellowstone fans might not agree with Kelly, but Beth and Jamie’s relationship is more complicated than it may seem.
Despite portraying one of the show’s most formidable characters, Kelly clearly harbors genuine sympathy for Jamie.
Kelly’s stance on redemption is somewhat surprising considering the unfolding narrative of the show.
Over the span of five seasons, the Dutton siblings have escalated their conflicts to extreme measures, engaging in sabotage and deep-seated animosity that has transformed their relationship into an intense feud.
Their animosity has intensified to the point where both are willing to consider lethal measures against each other.
This backdrop makes Kelly’s sympathy for Jamie all the more poignant, as she navigates these harrowing scenes with a mix of professionalism and personal reflection.
Kelly is set to return as Beth Dutton in the latter part of Yellowstone’s fifth and final season, expected to air in November 2024.
