The newest cast members of Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone spinoff, Y: Marshals, will look familiar to longtime fans of the Dutton saga. The CBS procedural, set to premiere midseason in the Sunday 9PM ET time slot, expands the story of Kayce Dutton as he takes on a new role as a U.S. Marshal in Montana.
Yellowstone Stars Returning
Luke Grimes (Kayce Dutton) and Kelsey Asbille (Monica) were already confirmed for the series, and now several more names are officially joining them.
- Brecken Merrill reprises his role as Tate Dutton, Kayce and Monica’s son. Viewers will see him at a new stage of life, as the actor himself is nearing college age.
- Gil Birmingham returns as Chief Thomas Rainwater.
- Mo Brings Plenty will once again play Mo, Rainwater’s loyal right-hand man.
The casting confirms that Native heritage and Broken Rock Reservation storylines will remain central to the spinoff. Yellowstone portrayed these narratives with respect and honesty, and Y: Marshals looks to continue that legacy.
New Additions to the Cast
Alongside familiar faces, fresh characters will shape Kayce’s new world as a U.S. Marshal:
- Arielle Kebbel as U.S. Marshal Belle
- Ash Santos as U.S. Marshal Andrea
- Tatanka Means as U.S. Marshal Miles
- Brett Cullen as Harry Gifford, head of the U.S. Marshals in Montana
- Logan Marshall-Green as Pete Calvin, an old military friend of Kayce Dutton
Themes and Setting
The spinoff builds directly on Kayce’s complex identity as both a Dutton and someone connected to Monica’s roots on the Broken Rock Reservation. In Yellowstone’s final episodes, Kayce negotiated to sell his father’s ranch to Chief Rainwater at 1883 prices while retaining life rights to the property—keeping the Duttons as neighbors in some sense.
Of all the Sheridan universe’s offshoots, Y: Marshals may feel the closest to the original Yellowstone, thanks to its balance of family, land, and justice.
