Why Did Kevin Costner Leave Yellowstone?
As noted above, Kevin Costner’s involvement with Yellowstone Season 5, Part 2 is still unknown because he stepped back from the series following Season 5, Part 1. In 2023, explosive reports came out suggesting Sheridan and Yellowstone star and executive producer Costner were at odds with one another. Subsequent reports alleged Costner wouldn’t return to Yellowstone until he approved of how his character John Dutton would be written off, and Sheridan addressed the star’s exit in a June 2023 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, saying he was “disappointed” by the way things went down, but he also assured fans, “I don’t do fuck-you car crashes… Whether [Dutton’s fate] inflates [Costner’s] ego or insults is collateral damage that I don’t factor in with regard to storytelling.”
Per People, when asked if he would be receiving his salary for the second half of Season 5, Costner detailed struggles experienced while negotiating, saying, “I will probably go to court over it.” We went a stretch of time without major updates, until Costner gave additional comment in an interview with Entertainment Tonight. “I’d like to be able to do it but we haven’t been able to,” Costner said. “I thought I was going to make seven [seasons] but right now we’re at five. So how it works out — I hope it does — but they’ve got a lot of different shows going on. Maybe it will. Maybe this will circle back to me. If it does and I feel really comfortable with [it], I’d love to do it.”
So if John Dutton returns, will there be a Yellowstone Season 6? Don’t get your hopes up.
Will Yellowstone Have A Season 6?
In May 2023, we learned that Yellowstone Season 5 will be the show’s final season, so no Season 6 is expected at this time. However, we’re not done with the Sheridan-verse just yet…
Yellowstone Spinoff Updates: The Status Of 1944 and 2024
Before you get too upset, remember there are two new Yellowstone spinoffs — currently titled 1944 and 2024 — in the works. Specific plot details for 1944 or 2024 remain unknown at this time, but Variety reports 2024 should begin airing after Yellowstone ends and that the series will feature “new cast members and locations with some crossover characters as well.” It’s worth nothing this might also be the series starring Matthew McConaughey, but we’ll have to wait and see.

When Does Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga Premiere?
Something else you can watch to fill the Yellowstone hole in your heart is Kevin Costner’s upcoming multi-part Western movie Horizon: An American Saga, which he starred in, directed, co-wrote, and produced.
Horizon: An American Saga Part 1 is scheduled to premiere on June 28, with Part 2 releasing on August 16. Before the two-part movie hits theaters, the highly-anticipated Western will make its world premiere on May 19 at the Cannes Film Festival. “I’ve been waiting for the right time to return and I’m proud to say that this time has come,” Costner told Variety. “Horizon, An American Saga is a story that began 35 years ago, and I can’t think of a better place than Cannes to reveal to the world the result of such a wonderful adventure. The French have always supported films and believed deeply in filmmaking. Just as I believe deeply in my film.”
