Will Trent Season 3 Release: A Premature Reveal Threatens Season 2 Impact

The Will Trent season 2 finale promises to feature intense scenes, shocking plot developments, and an ending that will make the wait for season 3 excruciating. The ABC crime drama series, created by Liz Heldens, Karin Slaughter, and Daniel T. Thomsen, is based on Slaughter’s Will Trent book series and follows a Georgia Bureau of Investigation agent with a harrowing past. Will Trent was abandoned as a baby and grew up in multiple foster homes, where he suffered endless abuse. The show continuously explores Will’s trauma, and the season 2 finale will further reveal troubling aspects of his past.

The Will Trent season 2 finale, “Do You See the Vision?,” airs on Tuesday, May 21, at 8 pm ET on ABC.

Unfortunately, following the premiere of the Will Trent season 2 finale, the series won’t return until 2025. ABC released its schedule for the 2024-2025 television season, and Will Trent didn’t make the cut for fall 2024. It’s being held for midseason, meaning Will Trent season 3 will air in early 2025, and fans must wait at least eight months for new episodes. The good news is that season 3’s 18 episodes will release uninterrupted, so, there will be no breaks between episodes. However, one aspect of the season 2 finale suggests the season 3 release date could hurt the show.

Ramón Rodríguez Revealed Will Trent Season 2 Ends On A Cliffhanger

The Cliffhanger Makes The Long Wait For Season 3 Agonizing

During an interview with TVLine following the release of Will Trent season 2, episode 7, Ramón Rodríguez, who plays the show’s eponymous character, teased what’s to come in the finale. While the actor’s comments entice excitement about what will happen in the last episode, they also make season 3’s delayed release date even more disappointing. When discussing the season 2 ending, Rodríguez said:

“There’s a bit of a cliffhanger, without a doubt. Season 2, towards the end of it, as we’re putting together the whole idea of what happened through this childhood trauma — this flashback, this memory that he’d blocked out — there’s some things that [Will] gains, which is great , and there are some things that he loses, which is not great.”

According to Rodríguez, Will Trent season 2 will end on a cliffhanger. Of course, a shocking ending with no resolution isn’t too surprising, given how this season has played out with uncovering traumatic moments from Will’s past and the recent development in Will and Angie’s relationship. Plus, even the Will Trent season 2 premiere featured a surprising ending, and the first episode shouldn’t outdo the last. However, the fact that the finale will leave viewers hanging means they will be waiting in anticipation of what happens next and won’t get answers until 2025, further upsetting fans.

Will’s Trauma Will Return In The Season 2 Finale

Will Identified His Repressed Memory In Episode 8

Young Will holding up a gun in Will Trent season 2, episode 8

As fans recall, Will finally put the pieces of his repressed memory together during Will Trent season 2, episode 8, and it was even more disturbing than anyone could ever imagine. Will had been experiencing flashes of a forgotten memory from his childhood all season, and a case he worked on in the eighth episode helped him finally solve the puzzle. When he was a young teenager, Will had a foster mom, Anna, who treated him well (unlike his other foster parents). But Anna’s partner, Jack, was abusive, so, Will hid his foster dad’s gun to protect her.

[ Will Trent season 2] episode 10 features more of Will trying to process his trauma, while also uncovering more distressful information about his past.

One night when Jack was hurting Anna, Will grabbed the gun and shot Jack in the arm. Jack wrestled the weapon away from Will, beat him with it, and almost killed him, but Anna intervened. Sadly, Jack ended up shooting and murdering Anna, and Will felt responsible for his foster mother’s death. Consequently, his brain repressed the memory, making him forget about it until now. Will’s uncle Antonio brought him to Puerto Rico in episode 9 as an escape from the rediscovered trauma, but Will’s backstory will return in the Will Trent season 2 finale. Ramón Rodríguez told TVLine:

“In [episode] eight, we get to see the culmination of this childhood trauma that Will has blocked from his memory. [It] gets put together — what that meant and signified — and it’s intense. And we do get a reprieve, we do get a moment to sort of come up for air, but very quickly [we] get pulled down under water again with a really intense twist and turn. I don’t know how much I can talk about it, but I will say it’s a really intense ending [to the season] that I don’t think people will see coming, and it’s a case that pays off in a really tough way.”

The reveal regarding Will’s past was shocking in and of itself, but according to Rodríguez, the series has more tricks up its sleeve. Episode 10 features more of Will trying to process his trauma, while also uncovering more distressful information about his past. During the upcoming hour, the GBI and APD work together to solve a serial killer case that started in episode 9. Someone is killing pedophiles, and this latest case will tie into Will’s storyline, culminating in a cliffhanger. Thankfully, ABC renewed Will Trent for season 3, so, fans will eventually see the fallout of season 2’s ending.
