Will Michael Gandolfini continue his father, James Gandolfini’s Sopranos legacy?

The Daredevil: Born Again actor, 25, weighed in on a potential prequel series where he would reprise his role as a young Tony Soprano, who his father famously portrayed for six seasons on the HBO show.

“Look, it’s David’s universe,” he told Entertainment Tonight, referring to the show’s creator, David Chase. “It’s up to David, ultimately. I know that David’s working on some other things, not Sopranos related, which would be exciting.”

Though Michael would “love” to work with the producer again, he confessed, “I think Tony’s probably set to rest now for good.” While he acknowledges that anything could happen, “my guess would be, that character [has] now closed the book.”

“I’m so honored that I got to be a part of that story,” Michael added, referencing his role in The Many Saints of Newark. “I got to be a small part of that huge world, and like, that is one of the greatest gifts that has ever really been a part of my career. So I’m grateful for it, and I’m ready to move on and be a new thing.”

The Sopranos followed the life of Tony Soprano, a New Jersey mob boss, as he dealt with personal and professional issues in his home and business. It ran for six seasons before ending in 2007.

The role scored James one Golden Globe Award, three SAG awards and three Emmys. He died of a heart attack in 2013 at the age of 51.

Michael has previously stepped into Tony Soprano’s shoes. In 2021, the actor starred as a younger version of his father’s iconic character in a prequel movie titled The Many Saints of Newark.

“It’s a profound honor to continue my dad’s legacy while stepping into the shoes of a young Tony Soprano,” Michael said in a statement obtained by Variety and Deadline at the time of his casting.

“I’m thrilled that I am going to have the opportunity to work with David Chase and the incredible company of talent he has assembled,” Michael added of the series creator.
