Will There Be a Season 2 of ‘NCIS: Origins’? Everything We Know After the Season 1 Finale

Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs’ origin story will continue unfolding for another season!

NCIS: Origins was renewed for season 2 before the first season ended on April 28. The show, which is a prequel to the long-running show NCIS, was officially renewed by CBS in February 2025.

The series takes place in 1991 and tells the story of Gibbs’ professional and personal life while starting his career with the Naval Criminal Investigative Service. Origins follows Gibbs as he tries to pick up the pieces after his wife and daughter tragically die in a car crash.

Mark Harmon reprised his role as the older Gibbs by narrating the show. Meanwhile, Austin Stowell plays the younger Gibbs and told PEOPLE in October 2024 that it was “the opportunity of a lifetime.”

“I dream about the show, almost every night,” Stowell said at the time. “He’s given me the greatest gift that I could ask for … This is the Gibbs who’s making mistakes, who’s living with ghosts and trying to put his life back together. And that’s a lot of fun for me to play.”

The series also stars Kyle Schmid, who plays the younger version of Special Agent Mike Franks (originally played by Muse Watson), and Mariel Molino as Special Agent Cecilia “Lala” Dominguez.

Here’s everything we know about NCIS: Origins season 2.

Will there be a season 2 of NCIS: Origins?

CBS confirmed that NCIS: Origins was renewed for season 2 in a February 2025 press release, per TVLine.

“We are so happy that NCIS: Origins has been so well received by both longtime NCIS fans and franchise newcomers,” the show’s co-showrunners, Gina Lucita Monreal and David J. North, told Parade in February 2025.

They added, “We’re thrilled to be returning for a second season and can’t wait to tell more incredible stories of Gibbs, Franks, Lala, and the rest of the team with the superbly talented actors who play them.”

What will NCIS: Origins season 2 be about?

The second season of NCIS: Origins will continue telling Gibbs’ origin story while also highlighting his colleagues’ backgrounds.

Season 1 started by showing Gibbs reeling from the loss of his wife, Shannon, and daughter, Kelly, just four months after their deaths. In addition to learning how to live without them, he’s also living with the consequences of taking revenge on Pedro Hernandez, the drug lord responsible for their deaths.

Gibbs’ story will continue unfolding in the second season to explain how their deaths have affected his career motivations to fight for victims and get justice.

Meanwhile, he’ll keep forging a complicated relationship with his mentor, Mike Franks, after the first season showed how Gibbs both looks up to and questions his decisions. Season 1 also briefly looked into Franks’ background with flashbacks to his younger self.

The second season could also highlight Gibbs’ relationship with his colleague Cecilia “Lala” Dominguez after they had a flirty friendship throughout the first season.

“The relationship between Gibbs and Lala is a unique and impactful one, and it’s one that we definitely want to highlight and see through to the end,” showrunner Monreal teased to ScreenRant in February 2025.

Season 2 will also continue answering questions that were left unexplored after the season 1 finale.

Who is returning for season 2 of NCIS: Origins?

The cast of NCIS: Origins season 2 has not been formally announced.

However, viewers will most likely see Stowell, Schmid and Molino reprise their roles. Tyla Abercrumbie (Field Operation Support Officer Mary Jo Hayes), Diany Rodriguez (Special Agent Vera Strickland) and Caleb Foote (Special Agent Bernard “Randy” Randolf) are also likely to return as they are key characters in Gibbs’ life.

Stowell previously spoke about hearing the news that they were getting renewed for a second season while still working on the first season.

“To know that we’re coming back to do it again before we’re even done with the first one, I know what a luxury that is,” he told Entertainment Tonight in April 2025. “I’m feeling very blessed right now … Best job of my life.”

When will NCIS: Origins season 2 come out?

CBS has not shared when NCIS: Origins season 2 will premiere.

The first season premiered on Oct. 14, 2024, and had 18 episodes, including its April 28 finale.
