Will Queen Charlotte Continue on Bridgerton? Here’s the Latest
Fans of Netflix’s hit series “Bridgerton” are eagerly speculating about the future of Queen Charlotte, a character known for her unique charm and authority. As a central character, it’s hard to imagine the show without her. Historically, Queen Charlotte actually died in November 1818, which is close to the show’s current timeline, which is set around 1815. This raises an important question: Will “Bridgerton” follow historical events or go its own way?
Showrunner Jess Brownell offered some insight in a discussion with TVLine. She expressed her deep admiration for Golda Rosheuvel, the actress who plays Queen Charlotte. Brownell mentioned that she and series creator Shonda Rhimes decided to operate in an “alternate dimension,” implying that the show might not adhere strictly to historical events.
Brownell elaborated on this idea, noting that the show’s departure from history begins with Queen Charlotte and Lady Danbury’s efforts to make society more inclusive, as seen in the prequel series “Queen Charlotte.” This is where the timeline deviates, Brownell said, suggesting that Queen Charlotte could potentially live forever in this fictional world.
This approach fits in with the overall creative vision of the show’s executive producer and director, Tom Verica. In a previous interview with TVLine, Verica emphasized the balance between historical accuracy and creative storytelling. He explained that while the series is a fictional retelling, they also wanted to honor aspects of Queen Charlotte’s real life. To achieve this, the creative team worked with historian Polly Putnam to decide which historical elements to include and which to alter.

Verica describes their approach to incorporating historical details to ground the story in reality while remaining clear about how they differ. This means that while the show includes authentic aspects of Queen Charlotte’s life, it also takes creative liberties to enhance the story. Series creator Shonda Rhimes carefully chose which real-life elements to incorporate to bring authenticity to the time period while also creating a story that fits within the fictional world of “Bridgerton.”
This combination of historical accuracy and creative storytelling suggests that Queen Charlotte’s future on “Bridgerton” may not match her real-life fate. This allows the character to continue to play a dynamic role in the series, ensuring that fans can continue to enjoy her presence within the complex social structure of the show’s Regency period.
