Will Frank Reagan Retire on ‘Blue Bloods’? Showrunner Answers Question About Tom Selleck’s Character
There are so many possibilities as to how Blue Bloods might end, but showrunner Kevin Wade has teased the conclusion for Tom Selleck’s character, Frank Reagan.
Will Frank Reagan Retire on ‘Blue Bloods’?
After part 1 of season 14 of Blue Bloods aired, fans began questioning if Frank was going to hang up his hat as the New York City Police Commissioner or continue working.
“I’m pretty sure that Frank would stay in his job until the series ended,” Kevin told TV Insider in May 2024 of why he didn’t see Frank retiring. “We didn’t really pursue that avenue because the show is built on him being the police commissioner of New York City. So to take a detour during the last mile, if this is the last mile, I don’t know what he would be doing down at the hardware store or having coffee with old buddies during the day. I always have to look at stuff that generates stories. Police Commissioner of New York generates stories. He’s the CEO of 35,000 cops.”
And in that same regard, most viewers would probably agree that Frank will likely not be killed off in the show’s finale, as he is too integral to the core of the show. The outlook might not be so positive for other Blue Bloods characters, we think.
Season 14 is the show’s last, and part 2 began airing on October 18, 2024. One thing that has always remained certain about Frank is that he has always been passionate about his job.
The Series Finale Will Not Have Cliffhangers
As for the series finale, Kevin also dished on what viewers could expect for the show’s main cast members.
“There won’t be any cliffhangers because there’s no cliff, but it ends,” he told the outlet. “Anything we would do that was an open question would by definition never be answered, so we’re trying to bring character stories to a close in that one. Obviously, we have some stories, some plot, but no, it’s designed as the last one.”
The Final Episode Will Be Emotional
Though the final episode of season 14 aims to leave no questions unanswered, it might bring viewers to tears. Tom did reveal that the final scene that he filmed was a Reagan family dinner.
“My last scene was ironically family dinner; that was also the first scene I shot on the show 15 years ago! I’m not going to tell you everything about the last episode … but the family dinner kind of reunites the Reagan family,” he told TV Insider in May 2024. “Erin’s daughter Nicky [Sami Gayle] was there and so was Jack [Tony Terraciano] Danny’s older son. Everybody agreed with me that we should close the set for the family dinner and not exploit that. Most of them had four more days to shoot, but not me.”
“We were shooting for hours and all of a sudden, they said ‘Well, that was the last shot.’ I always wanted to say this poem, ‘Love Is Not All’ by Edna St. Vincent Millay,” he told the outlet. “There was crying and there was an enormous amount of hugs. Donnie [Wahlberg] was really broken up; he didn’t say much. Bridget [Moynahan] spoke. Just about everybody said something. Vanessa [Ray] was pretty beat up by the experience.”
