Comedian and actor Tim Allen has reached a new chapter in his spiritual journey — literally.
The Home Improvement star recently announced on social media that he’s begun reading the New Testament after spending nearly a year immersed in the Old Testament. Now, he says he’s “amazed” by the writings of the Apostle Paul — particularly the Book of Romans.
“Finished the Old Testament, and it is such a gift when I get out of the way and the words and meaning flow,” the 71-year-old wrote in a post on X. “This week, I am now in the book of the Gospel of Paul. A Roman Jew familiar with Plato, Stoicism, and other Greek schools of thought. I am amazed in seven pages!”
He followed up on the post with a clarification: “Okay, specifically reading Apostle Paul’s letter to the Romans.”
Allen first began publicly chronicling his Bible reading journey earlier this year. In February, he shared that reading through the Old Testament with intentional focus had been nothing short of life-changing.
“After nearly a year, I have finished [the] entire Old Testament, and the experience of re-reading, dedicated focus and no drifting has made this a humbling [,] overwhelming experience,” he wrote. “What a treasure.”
Though raised Episcopalian, Allen has long described himself as someone who wrestled with questions about faith — especially following the tragic death of his father when Allen was just 11. That heartbreak was followed years later by personal struggles, including a highly publicized 1978 arrest for cocaine possession, which led to a two-year prison sentence in his mid-20s.
Over time, however, Allen says he’s come to see God not as a distant figure but as a personal “Builder” who offers guidance and purpose.
“I always do ask … The Builder, what did you want me to do?” he said in a 2011 interview. “And I do ask it. But you got to be prepared for the answer.”
Allen is not alone. In recent years, a number of high-profile comedians have openly expressed a renewed interest in faith and Christianity.
Wes Huff, a Christian apologist, recently revealed that podcast host and comedian Joe Rogan has been regularly attending church and exploring the Bible. “He’s a very inquisitive individual,” Huff said. “And I think for the better in that he’s communicating with me and other people in his life … on the trustworthiness of the pages of Scripture.”
In 2023, Rob Schneider revealed he’d converted to Catholicism and said his faith is changing the way he approaches comedy. “I don’t know if I can tell dirty jokes anymore,” Schneider said. “I want to come to it from a place of faith, a place of something good in my heart.”
As for Allen, his posts show a man not preaching but quietly and curiously seeking truth — one page at a time. And as he continues reading the letters of Paul and the life of Jesus, it’s clear this is more than just a book for him — it’s a revelation in progress.
