Why The Big Bang Theory’s Return Could Be the Biggest TV Event Yet md14

Young Sheldon may jump around in its storytelling, but one real-world event quietly helps ground the series in time: the death of science fiction icon Isaac Asimov.

In the season 5 episode “Babies, Lies and a Resplendent Cannoli,” Sheldon is heartbroken after learning that the author has died. Asimov, known for classics like Foundation and I, Robot, had a huge influence on the young genius.

Because Asimov passed away on April 6, 1992, the moment effectively places the episode — and many surrounding events — in that year.

According to co-creator Steve Molaro, the writers intentionally keep the timeline flexible since the story is narrated by an adult Sheldon looking back on his childhood. That approach allows the show to stretch or compress time when needed.

Even so, Asimov’s death stands out as one of the few concrete dates in the entire Big Bang Theory universe.
