Why Severide Might Have to Leave Firehouse 51 on Chicago Fire
All eyes are on Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) in Chicago Fire Season 13, Episode 2 (“Ride the Blade”) as he navigates conflicts of interest at Firehouse 51. As fans know, Severide’s estranged brother, Jack Damon (Michael Bradway), has joined Truck 81 under the supervision of Severide’s wife, Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo). CFD doesn’t like it when family members work at the same station, and Severide has been hiding the double whammy of having both his wife and his brother as co-workers. Firehouse 51’s new chief, Dom Pascal (Dermot Mulroney), calls Severide out to his workplace with Stella, warning him to keep his relationship strictly professional on the job site. But Severide deliberately fails to mention that he also has a brother at age 51. RELATED: Revisiting the Epic Love Story of Stellaride Since Damon revealed his relationship with Severide, the two have grown closer. Severide wants to nurture his relationship with Damon, but will that put him at odds with Stella? As Damon continues to ignore Stella’s orders at work and idolize his brother, Severide finds himself at the center of a triangle of conflict in Season 13, Episode 2. Here’s what happened: Stella and Severide have worked well together for years, thanks in part to their shared understanding of their lanes: Severide works on a team, while Stella works on a truck. They have different responsibilities and years of experience. But Damon’s behavior on recent calls has disrupted Stellaride’s happy harmony. Damon is assigned to accompany Stella’s truck, but it’s clear he wants to work with Severide. Fans will recall that in the Season 13 premiere, Damon ignored one of Stella’s orders to stand back when they came upon a burning building and was later crushed by debris (though he wasn’t injured). In Episode 2, when 51 responded to a woman crushed under a boat that had crashed into the shore of Lake Michigan, Damon continued to defy Stella’s orders. While Stella ordered Damon to stabilize the boat, he ran toward the victim. The boat soon collapsed, but fortunately 51 was able to get the woman out with minor injuries.
Back at the station, Stella quickly waved Damon away. “Your orders are to stabilize the boat,” Stella sternly reminded him. “The team is on the victim.”
“I didn’t hear you,” Damon admitted.
“You mean you didn’t listen to your commander?” Stella yelled.
“I guess I just saw her stuck down there, and my legs started moving,” Damon blurted out. “I had to help her.”
“You’re always waiting for orders,” Stella said.
“Got it,” Damon nodded.
“Are you listening to me now?” Stella snapped.
“I heard you,” Damon said. “Sorry, I wasn’t thinking.”
Severide overheard Stella and Damon’s conversation and called Damon into his office to talk.
“I know you heard her,” Severide explained. “I was right there.”
“Okay, maybe I did,” Damon admitted. “But if we’d gotten there a second later—” “Stop,” Severide said. “If you’d stabilized the boat, it might not have gone down. But we’ll never know because we don’t get a second chance, which is why we have to follow orders.”
“Okay, so what now?” Damon asks, pointing out that Stella has had a problem with him since his tumultuous introduction in Season 12. “If you tell her, she’ll fire me– and probably report me for misconduct. That could ruin my career, Kelly.”
Stella then suggests to Severide that Damon join him for training. Severide is initially taken aback by the suggestion but agrees after Stella insists, saying that Damon is too much of a puppy. (At this point, Severide decides not to tell Stella that Damon actually heard her calling.) Damon is in a daze after learning that he’s training with Severide. After Severide explains that it was Stella’s idea, Damon tells him straight.
“Yeah, but you obviously didn’t tell her,” Damon explains with a grin. Why didn’t Severide tell her? What made him protect Damon?
