Why Is Young Sheldon Ending? Producers Explain the Big Bang Theory Spinoff Had to Wrap Up

Young Sheldon’s executive producers explain why the time was right for Young Sheldon to wrap up its run.
Young Sheldon is still popular with its fans, but the time was still right for the show to end, according to producers.

Per TribLive.com, Young Sheldon executive producer Steve Holland commented on the fate of the Big Bang Theory spinoff series. Holland noted that, as a prequel, the natural endgame for Young Sheldon was already put in place, based on what has already been revealed in the original series about Sheldon Cooper’s childhood. Ideally, it’s also best to end a series while it’s still on top before there’s a perceived dip in quality or popularity, as suggested by the EP.

“There [are] certain things that we know happened in Sheldon’s life when he’s 14, as the character is this season, and we started talking about the future of the show and what it would look like,” Holland explained. “We know he goes off to Caltech at 14. It just felt like the right time to end the show and to end it strong while it was still on top.”

Also feeling that it just felt right to hang it up with Season 7, fellow EP Chuck Lorre added, “That’s a level of hubris that I think gets in the way of doing a good job. You do what feels right. You do what feels appropriate for the characters and the relationships, the tone of the show. You do stuff that touches yourself, and then you hope someone agrees with you.”

The Story Won’t End With the Young Sheldon Finale

Young Sheldon is wrapping up, but the story will continue with another spinoff series. It’s been revealed that a new show will continue to follow Georgie (Montana Jordan), Sheldon’s brother, along with his fiancé, Mandy (Emily Osment). It’s not going to be the only expansion of the series, as there have also been reports of a Big Bang Theory spinoff, presumably set after the events of the original series, entering development at Max.

Fans of The Big Bang Theory may also be happy to know that the older Sheldon Cooper, as played by Jim Parsons, will be featured once again. He will be joined by Amy (Mayim Bialik) in the final episode of Young Sheldon, most likely for a flash-forward sequence to help wrap up the story. It’s not yet clear is Parsons, Bialik, or any other Big Bang Theory cast members will be a part of the Max spinoff.

The series finale of Young Sheldon will debut on CBS on May 16, 2024.
