Kelly Severide has been a fixture at Firehouse 51 for nearly a decade. He worked with his close friends Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer) and Leslie Shay (Lauren German) until Shay’s death. Joining “One Chicago” isn’t Kinney’s first time playing a first responder for NBC. In 2009, he starred in the network’s medical drama “Trauma,” which follows a group of San Francisco first responders as they deal with their work after a rescue helicopter crash kills one of the crew members. Kinney plays EMT Glenn Morrison, a rookie EMT transferred to the unit after the accident. This sets him apart from many of the rest –– he does not share their grief in the same way –– and also makes him the target of bullying, jokes, and sometimes was severely reprimanded when he joined the crew.

Kinney’s role was to play werewolf Mason Lockwood, brother of Richard Lockwood (Robert Pralgo) and uncle of Tyler Lockwood (Michael Trevino), who returns to Mystic Falls after his brother’s death. And even though he only appeared in a handful of episodes, Kinney told Glamor that the show played a key role in raising his profile as an actor. “People still love [my character] Mason Lockwood. That movie helped me a lot,” he said.

Although his workload on Chicago Fire and the rest of its sister series kept him busy for much of this decade, Kinney still found time to invest in film work. He played a member of SEAL Team Six in “Zero Dark Thirty” (he was the one who comforted the children with glow sticks); a reporter and kidnapping suspect in the thriller “The Forest” starring Natalie Dormer; and romance with the 2014 comedy “The Other Woman.”
The plot of that film follows a trio of women who realize they are all seeing the same man (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and that he is lying to them about his relationship status. His wife and two oblivious girlfriends team up to take revenge on him. In contrast to Coster-Waldau’s Mark, Kinney plays nice guy Phil, Kate’s (Leslie Mann) brother, who develops romantic feelings for Carly (Cameron Diaz).
