Why Chicago Fire Is on Pause: Casting Surprises and a November Return Date?

Fans of Chicago Fire will have to wait until November for the show’s return, as NBC has announced a temporary hiatus for the popular series. The break was confirmed via the official One Chicago Instagram page, alongside a clip teasing Chicago P.D.’s Officer Kiana Cook’s transition to the Intelligence unit. The post hinted at a storyline development involving Cook and Torres and announced the show’s return date as Wednesday, November 6.

The short break comes after the recent departure of new Firehouse 51 character Jack Damon, portrayed by Michael Bradway. Jack’s introduction had been a surprise for viewers, revealing him as Kelly Severide’s half-brother. However, shortly after joining the firehouse team, the young firefighter was dismissed by Chief Dom Pascal, following his decision to disregard orders during a call. This unexpected exit has left fans confused, especially given the dramatic nature of his initial storyline. Currently, IMDb credits Bradway’s role only for the first four episodes of Season 13, leaving fans wondering if he may return later on.

The sudden departure of Jack Damon has sparked a wave of speculation among fans about the show’s casting choices. One fan commented on social media, questioning why such a dynamic character was introduced only to be dismissed so soon: “If Jack Damon is already gone, then I really don’t understand why they introduced his character in such an explosive manner in the first place. I was hoping he’d stick around.”

Jack isn’t the only recent addition to leave the show early. Actor Rome Flynn, who portrayed Derrick Gibson in Season 12, exited after just six episodes. Flynn expressed disappointment about his departure, telling Variety: “Just like the fans, I was sad to see Gibson go. He was a character I really enjoyed playing.” While he’s left the firehouse, Flynn hasn’t ruled out the possibility of a return, saying, “I’d love to work with the Chicago Fire team again in the future when the timing is right.”

Flynn’s departure followed those of other key characters, including Alberto Rosende and Kara Killmer, both of whom had long-standing roles on the show. These recent exits have fueled speculation among fans, with many wondering if casting issues might be the reason behind these abrupt character arcs.

For now, viewers will have to wait and see if recent cast changes will lead to more permanent exits or if some characters will eventually return. With the show resuming in November, fans can expect the return of more familiar faces and, potentially, some new twists in the Firehouse 51 storylines.
