Why A One Chicago 3-Series Crossover May Not Happen This Season Explained By Stars
Cast members David Eigenberg and Jessy Schram raise doubts about a potential One Chicago crossover this upcoming season. Despite a slight delay, NBC eventually renewed Chicago Fire season 13, Chicago PD season 12, and Chicago Med season 10, preserving the network’s One Chicago Wednesday block. As all three shows return to their usual programming schedule with a total of 22 episodes, One Chicago can tackle so many more storylines in its new year. This also effectively renews hopes for a new crossover event, which the Wolf Entertainment and NBC franchise is known for.
Speaking with TVLine during the recent TCA summer press tour, Chicago Fire‘s Eigenberg and Chicago Med‘s Schram douse hopes for a One Chicago crossover happening this season. It turns out that COVID protocols continue to be a factor, even though it has been years since the global pandemic started. Eigenberg explained that “they wouldn’t intertwine” the three shows’ casts to prevent cross-contamination, although he, too, is hoping that the much-clamored special will happen. Meanwhile, Schram added that “there’s always talk [of crossovers], but we need to be able to schedule it in — and we have really demanding schedules.”

There have been smaller crossovers involving a few characters over the years. That said, viewers are waiting for a much bigger one that involves all three procedurals. As with many shows and films that exist in the same universe, these types of events are saved for vital narratives or milestones. The last One Chicago crossover was in 2019, before the coronavirus pandemic started. Ironically titled “Infection,” Chicago Fire, Chicago PD, and Chicago Med needed to deal with a city-wide virus outbreak created by a disgruntled scientist. All three branches worked together to tackle the crisis, which was told in three parts.
With a longer year ahead, it isn’t too late to come up with a scheme for another One Chicago crossover. All shows have already been back from the summer break and are currently in production…
Admittedly, the reasoning for NBC’s One Chicago shying away from crossover is understandable; better safe than sorry. However, with proper planning, it shouldn’t be impossible to do, once they decide to move forward. Considering the incredibly difficult year that all three branches of the franchise went through, doing a crossover could revitalize the universe. It would also get everyone re-acquainted with each other, especially in light of several cast members leaving and new ones coming in. Everyone just needs to be more vigilant during bigger filming days.
Overall, with a longer year ahead, it isn’t too late to come up with a scheme for another One Chicago crossover. All shows have already been back from the summer break and are currently in production, including Chicago Fire season 13, as revealed by a couple of set photos. Perhaps once the producers realize there is a way to do the much-clamored event in a way that will ensure everyone’s safety, they will finally start planning it.
