The Grey’s Anatomy season 21 finale aired on ABC yesterday, and we’re still stuck trying to process how everything wrapped up. The medical drama is known to end its seasons off with a bang, and this finale was no different. Just when everything seemed to be under control after a tense hostage situation, disaster struck as a massive fire broke out inside Grey Sloan Memorial, putting countless lives at risk and leaving fans anxiously waiting to find out who survived.
Spoilers ahead from the Grey’s Anatomy season 21 finale!
Fortunately, fans don’t have to wait until Grey’s Anatomy season 22 to learn the fates of some of the characters. Series showrunner Meg Marinis spoke with The Hollywood Reporter and shared that these two beloved characters are safe. Those characters are Meredith and Warren. If you watched the episode in its entirety, you wouldn’t be surprised by this. Both Meredith and Warren were last seen outside the hospital in the season 21 finale. Meredith stood watching the fire in shock, while Warren ran towards the building.
The fire started after Jenna, a mother whose young daughter was a current patient at the hospital, brought a highly flammable acetylene tank into the operating room. She used it to threaten the staff and force Dr. Amelia Shepherd to perform a risky surgery, desperate to save her daughter’s life. After Meredith saves the day and helps Amelia so that she can complete the operation, Jenna reveals that the tank was never full. However, we find out later in the episode that the tank wasn’t actually empty when she brought it in. Jenna had opened the valve, which caused the flammable gas to leak out, triggering the massive fire on the OR floor.
There were four main doctors on the OR floor at the time of the fire: Bailey, Natalie, Jules, and Link. Their fates remain uncertain, as the episode ended before revealing what happened to them once the fire broke out. Adams’ fate is also left hanging in the balance. He was last seen rushing toward the OR floor to warn everyone about the danger, but the episode never showed him actually making it there. With no confirmation of his location when the fire erupted, it’s unclear whether he got caught in the blast or managed to escape.
Simone, Kwan, Amelia, Owen, and Webber were also last seen in the hospital at the end of the finale, but their exact locations at the time of the fire remain unknown. Jo was outside the hospital, so there’s a chance she could be safe. Additionally, Teddy probably wasn’t at the hospital when the fire started because Jules and Natalie had told Bailey that they hadn’t seen her there for several hours beforehand.
With so many characters’ fates left uncertain, fans are eagerly anticipating the premiere of Grey’s Anatomy season 22 to see who survived the devastating fire. The good thing is that at least we know Meredith and Warren are safe.
