How many actresses played Penny in The Big Bang Theory?
In the early days of The Big Bang Theory, the character of “Penny” was not in the picture. The initial plot of the show was more or less the same with the boys meeting a young woman, but instead of Kaley Cuoco’s Penny, it was Katie as the “girl next door” portrayed by Amanda Walsh.
The creators shot a pilot with Jim Parsons as Sheldon, Johnny Galecki as Leonard, and Walsh as Katie. However, the original iteration of the pilot was rejected by CBS.
Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady (creators of the show) have made it clear on many occasions that it was not because of Walsh’s performance. She played the role of Katie perfectly. However, the problem was the character itself. In the original pilot, Katie appeared to be rude and mean to Sheldon and Leonard and it seemed that she was clearly just using them for her own benefit, which was not well received and resulted in it being rejected.
After the initial setback, Katie’s character was replaced by Penny, who was kind to our sweet, nerdy scientists and considered them her friends.
Did Leonard and Penny date in real life?
Yes, Leonard and Penny did date in real life. It was revealed during the later seasons of the show that Cuoco and Galecki dated exclusively for two years off-screen. However, they kept it out of the public eye. The actors even stated that their relationship helped them portray the love and respect they have for each other on screen. However, unfortunately, their relationship ended after two years, but their professional commitments helped them heal and develop a deep friendship.
