Where Was After Everything Filmed?
After Everything is the fifth installment in the After franchise, and it continues Tessa and Hardin’s love story. Where was the movie filmed?
After Everything serves as the fifth movie in the After film series, and it picks up one year after the last one left off. However, this time, the story (for the most part) takes place in a European country, which so happens to be one of the movie’s filming locations. The 2023 romance drama film, directed and written by Castille Landon, is the final installment of the After franchise, following the releases of After, After We Collided, After We Fell, and After Ever Happy — all of which were based on Anna Todd’s After book series. The movie is a direct sequel to After Every Happy, and by its end, fans finally get closure regarding Tessa and Hardin’s love story.
The cast of After Everything includes Hero Fiennes Tiffin as Hardin Scott, Josephine Langford as Tessa Young, Louise Lombard as Trish Daniels, Stephen Moyer as Christian Vance, Mimi Keene as Nathalie, Benjamin Mascolo as Sebastian, Cora Kirk as Freya, Rosa Escoda as Kat , Jessica Webber as Maddy, Ella Martine as Naomi, Laura Dutra as Paloma, Chance Perdomo as Landon, Kiana Madeira as Nora, Rob Estes as Ken Scott, Arielle Kebbel as Kimberly, Aya Ivanova as Emery, Carter Jenkins as Robert, and Anton Kottas as Smith. The cast and the crew traveled overseas to capture the scenes in the 2023 film, and it was not the first time an After movie was filmed in one of these two places.
Sofia, Bulgaria
According to The Cinemaholic, principal photography on After Everything happened in Bulgaria and Portugal. As for the Bulgaria part of the shoot, the cast and crew bounced around different spots in the city of Sofia to film a plethora of scenes (they assumed also utilized areas just outside of Sofia for different parts of the script). Sofia is the capital and the largest city of Bulgaria, as it has a population of over $1.2 million people as of the census in 2021. Sofia is rich with culture and history, making it an appealing location for film and television productions, like The Hitman’s Bodyguard and The Expendables 2 and 3.
Additionally, After Everything was not the first time the After franchise was filmed in Bulgaria —After We Fell, the third movie in the series, and After Ever Happy, the fourth film, also shot a handful of scenes in the Balkan country. After moving their production to Sofia, Bulgaria, for the third installment in the franchise, the producers were seemingly happy with the location because they used it for the next two movies. As a result, the backgrounds of some parts of the fifth and last movie might look familiar.
Unfortunately, the exact spots in the beautiful city where some of the sequences for After Everything were captured are unknown. But when watching the 2023 romance drama, fans might be able to spot a couple of Sofia’s notable landmarks in the background. Since the film does not take place in Sofia, Bulgaria, though, it might be hard to recognize the scenes that were shot in the city (unless viewers are from Sofia).
Lisbon, Portugal

A large portion of the story in After Everything occurs in Lisbon, Portugal, which is why it was one of the two primary filming locations for the final installment in the After franchise. Like Sofia in Bulgaria, Lisbon is Portugal’s capital and largest city, with a population of over 500,000 as of 2022. Lisbon is also a popular destination for Hollywood productions. Aside from After Everything, movies like On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, Fast X, The Ninth Gate, Heart of Stone, and many more have been filmed in the city.
In the 2023 romance drama, Hardin travels to Lisbon after his mother suggests he reunites with his childhood friend Natalie, who is now living in the Portuguese city. However, since he is still in love with Tessa, it’s difficult for Hardin to move on. But he tries to enjoy his time with Natalie anyway, even though some people are not as welcoming as her. Since the majority of After Everything takes place in Lisbon, the movie contains many establishing shots of the city and scenes with landmarks that are easy to spot, like Lisbon Cathedral and the Vasco da Gama Bridge.
