The town of Ransom Canyon may be at the heart of the Netflix series but sadly it doesn’t actually exist, although creator April Blair did find inspiration from real towns across New Mexico where it was actually filmed.

The cast and crew spent a lot of the 15-month production in both Albuquerque and Santa Fe where real-life ranches were used so despite being set in Texas, filming didn’t take place there.

Blair, who is also behind Wednesday and All American, told Tudum: “Most of New Mexico is adobe architecture, and there’s this one little old mining town in northern New Mexico very close to the Texas border called Las Vegas, ironically, that just looks like an old Texas town.

“It has all the old turn of the century architecture and storefronts.”

More specifically, both the Blame Her Ranch in Ribera and the Bonanza Creek Ranch in Santa Fe feature in Ransom Canyon.

Opening up to Distractify, actor Jack Schumacher shared: “It’s a really gorgeous area. And when you’re out riding a horse through this scenic ranch, it’s easy to sort of feel like you’re really there with the characters.”

In addition to real-life places, Netflix’s Alburquerque production hub, which reportedly has 12 sound stages, was also used throughout filming.
