What’s really going down in Salem this week?

The good news: I survived my cross-country road trip with the dog, and it was actually very pleasant! The bad news: I watched ten episodes of Days during my drive! Just kidding… mostly. It was a decent way to pass the hours on the road (don’t worry, I just listen to it — I don’t mount the phone and try to watch or anything). I’m now a week behind again, on account of moving chaos, but I felt the need to hop on and record some thoughts on what I have seen.

Which brings me to… did Johnny DiMera have the most insane first day of work you’ve ever seen, or what?

Let me get this straight: he went to hours of orientation and onboarding, after which he walked into an executive’s office, asked what his actual job would be (?!?), and then declared he was taking an early lunch so that he could go yap with his grandparents about an attempted murder. I think it’s clear that no one at Days has ever held a normal office job, or even seen a television show such as Mad Men or The Office or Parks and Recreation where people go to an office, but this was deranged even for Salem. What company is onboarding people before they even have a specific job function? Oh, I know. The kind of company that is hedging its financial prospects on a single manuscript being shepherded through the publishing process by a woman who hasn’t worked in publishing since Clinton was in office.

If Sophia is looking for a career path, though, she should look into medicine, because that was the cleanest and simplest birth I have ever seen on TV.

Days of Our Lives: Did Johnny Shoot EJ?

I’m aware that this is not a documentary on the harsh realities of the birthing process, but this teenage girl fully gave birth on her own (with the guidance of a YouTube video!) with this little mess?! A brief shot of her shoving some stuff into a trash bag doesn’t quite sell this scenario. And you know Amy Choi has every sheet, pillowcase, blanket, and towel in that house committed to memory, so she’d notice if an entire set went missing. Anyway, I might as well say something positive, which is that Rachel Boyd (the actress now playing Sophia) did a pretty great job in some challenging solo scenes. I bought Sophia’s panic and pain, if not the practicalities of what she pulled off. I can’t tell you how badly I do not want to watch Leo and Javi foster this child, but as a storytelling move, this is all set up pretty well.

Oh, and I see Gwen is back, and for some reason loves that ugly-ass piece of costume jewelry. Siiiiiiiigh.
