What’s Happening to Dermot Mulroney’s Chicago Fire Chief Pascal?
Hicago Fire’s new Chief Dom Pascal (Dermot Mulroney) made a big splash in the Season 13 premiere.
“As you may know, I’m Chief Dom Pascal. Been there 27 years,” Pascal told Firehouse 51 after arriving for his first day of work in Season 13, Episode 1. “A couple of things I want to make clear right from the start: I have the utmost respect for D.C. Wallace Boden (Eammon Walker), and it’s been an honor to be here, in his old position, with my own style of leadership. I do things my own way, so you should all expect some changes at Firehouse 51.”

Who is Dermot Mulroney’s Chicago Fire character, Chief Dom Pascal?
Mulroney made his Chicago Fire debut in the Season 13 premiere (“Monster in the Field”) as the new leader of Firehouse 51 after Boden was promoted to Deputy Chief. Pascal spent his first 10 years fighting fires in Chicago before moving to Miami, only to return to the Windy City.
The entire Firehouse 51 was nervous about Pascal’s arrival until they saw him in action during a call at a smoke shop. This incident created the perfect opportunity for Pascal to show the firefighters what he could do. As butane tanks explode and shells rain down on firefighters, Pascal gives clear instructions before bravely running into the chaos without a shield to help civilians evacuate. From the start, Pascal proves that he’s not a do-or-die type—he’s pragmatic and confident in his command style.
“I think he’s missing the fear gene,” Novak (Jocelyn Hudon) exclaims when she sees Pascal running into the flames.
Pascal is efficient and straightforward, and he believes that the most valuable asset a firefighter can have is knowledge. After he imposes a rule that firefighters must put their phones in buckets during mealtimes so they can stay connected, 51 gets angry.
“With all due respect, Chief, but most of us have known each other for years,” Joe Cruz (Joe Miñoso) tells him.
“That’s where the trouble starts,” Pascal warns them. “Stop asking questions, stop trying to figure out new things. If your life depends on knowing who’s on your left and right on every call and what their next move is going to be, then nothing is too familiar.”

He brings Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo, Chris Herrmann (David Eigenberg), and Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) into his office to inform the lieutenants that there will be new briefings after every call. During the meeting with Severide, Pascal highlights the rule in the CFD handbook that states that immediate family members cannot work in the same station on the same shift. Meaning that he and Stella, who are married, are technically breaking the rules.) Conflicts of interest can be dangerous, and Boden has been ignoring that rule for years. “It seems to me that you both figured out how to manage it, considering how long you’ve worked together,” Pascal comments to Severide about him and Stella. “Yes, sir,” Severide assures him. “We’ve got it covered.” “Okay, just keep that in mind, it’s something I’ll keep an eye on,” Pascal warns.
