What new twists are coming in the third season of Will Trent?
The Will Trent cast is all smiles on the set of Season 3. The series’ new lead Gina Rodriguez shared a first look at the ABC crime drama’s highly anticipated return, posing for a pair of photos with her new co-stars.
“I’ll leave this here,” the Jane the Virgin alum wrote on Instagram. The selfies feature Rodriguez with lead actor Ramón Rodríguez and co-stars Erika Christensen (Angie Polaski) and Iantha Richardson (Faith Mitchell).
First reported in August, Gina Rodriguez has been cast as Marion Alba, “a confident, charismatic Assistant District Attorney new to Atlanta,” according to the official character breakdown. “After a less-than-stellar first meeting with Will, the pair are surprised to learn they must team up to investigate a crime in Atlanta’s gang world.”
ADA Alba’s arrival comes shortly after Will and Angie split in Season 2. The May 21 finale threw a grenade into the series’ central relationship, with Will arresting Angie for tampering with evidence in the Lenny Broussard case. And with Will and Angie on a break, perhaps even a permanent one, it opens up a window of opportunity in Will’s love life.
When TVLine spoke with executive producers Liz Heldens and Daniel Thomsen about whether this would lead to the introduction of a new romantic interest—perhaps Sara Linton—Helden replied, “I think the door is open for someone new to come into his life. We have to talk about that, and we have to talk about that with ABC—like, there’s a logistical question here: Do we want to bring the endgame in now? Or is it interesting to find someone else [at this point]? We have to be careful about that. We have to be careful about what [introducing Sara would do] to the ecosystem of the show. We have to be thoughtful about that.”
“We both knew that [Sara] was Will’s ultimate goal in the [Karin Slaughter] books,” Thomsen added. “At this point in Will’s life, I don’t know if he’s ready for that, and there are so many opportunities to explore in other directions.”
Gina Rodriguez, who most recently starred in the ABC comedy Not Dead Yet, is best known to TV audiences for her starring role on The CW’s beloved drama Jane the Virgin, which ended its five-season run in 2019. She also hosted ABC’s game show Lucky 13, alongside former NBA player Shaquille O’Neal.
Will Trent Season 3 will premiere in early 2025, with a projected 18 (mostly) uninterrupted episodes.
