Wednesday Season 2 Story Tease Is The Biggest Evidence For A Controversial Character’s Departure
A Wednesday season 2 tease hints that a controversial actor may not return to the series. Last year, Netflix’s Wednesday broke streaming records and served as a comeback for director Tim Burton. With Jenna Ortega’s electrifying performance as Wednesday Addams, the coming-of-age horror comedy series was a breath of fresh air compared to other reboots. Yet, TheAdam Family’s spinoff show still missed a few beats when it came to the love interests.
In a Variety interview with Elle Fanning, Jenna Ortega teased that Wednesday season 2 will have more horror and less romance. In the “Actors on Actors” series, Ortega told Fanning that “We’re ditching any romantic love interest for Wednesday, which is really great.” Wednesday season 1 devoted a lot of its screen time to the love triangle between Wednesday, Tyler, and Xavier. However, Ortega’s comments seem to suggest that Xavier’s part in Wednesday season 2 will be reduced. Following Percy Hynes White’s recent controversy, as well as some controversy with the character itself, there has been a discussion about whether Xavier will return at all.
Wednesday’s Xavier Actor Controversy Explained
At the beginning of June, Percy Hynes White was accused of sexual assault in a series of tweets (via Variety). In the Twitter thread, the poster alleges that White assaulted them and “multiple” friends of when he lived in Toronto. According to the Twitter user, White and his friend group had a reputation in Toronto for bringing girls to parties to get them drunk enough to sexually assault.
These claims are even harder to swallow with allegations that some of the girls were as young as thirteen ages old. The Twitter thread has caused other girls to come forward, but without any formal charges, there hasn’t been any confirmation that White will be removed from Wednesday season 2. About a week ago, White responded to the allegations in an Instagram statement where he claims he never met the Twitter user and called the allegations “false” and “baseless.”
Wednesday Season 2 Dropping Romances Hints At Xavier’s Departure
While Xavier does have the interesting power of drawing the future, he was mostly used as a love interest for Wednesday in Wednesday season 1. His dating history with Bianca was also used to pit her against Wednesday. If Wednesday season 2 is cutting back on the romance, that could mean that Xavier’s part will be limited. Xavier’s toxic behavior towards both Bianca and Wednesday already made him a controversial character. His Wednesday character combined with the actor’s allegations may lead to the character’s exit from the series.
In Wednesday season 1, Xavier was stuck in a love triangle with Wednesday and Tyler. As many have noted, Wednesday doesn’t seem that interested in either boy, and there isn’t a clear reason why the boys are so enamored with Wednesday. Besides gaslighting Wednesday and treating Bianca terribly, Xavier seems to complain for the majority of the season. He seems more annoyed with Wednesday than crushing on her. Xavier’s toxic behavior is not likely to be missed in Wednesday season 2.
What Xavier’s Exit Would Mean For Wednesday Season 2
In the Wednesday season 1 finale ending with Xavier giving Wednesday a phone, it initially appeared that he would continue to play a big role in the second season. After Wednesday gets mysterious texts on the phone, fans speculated whether Xavier was the one sending her these messages or maybe Xavier’s mysterious father. If Xavier left the series, the mystery of Xavier’s father would likely not be addressed. This would also mean that Xavier would likely not be connected to the stalker. The series could also scrap the stalker altogether or make it a much smaller part of the second season.
Besides the stalker plot, removing Xavier would also be good for Bianca’s character. Bianca’s character was unfairly cast as a villain in Wednesday season 1, which distracted from the true vllians in the show. With Xavier out of the way, Wednesday and Bianca could become closer. The two could help each other and promote a message of female friendships. After all, some fans believe Wednesday’s friendship with Enid to be one of the most interesting parts of the show. Seeing Wednesday have relationships not defined by sex would fix the love interest problem from the first season.
Ditching the romance and focusing on the horror elements will likely do the Netflix series well. Additionally, Jenna Ortega’s comments and Percy Hynes White’s controversy seem to hint that Xavier’s place in the series is on thin ice. Letting go of a weak character like Xavier would be a beneficial move for Netflix’s Wednesday, so the show can shine on the true star: Wednesday Addams.
