“We Shot It Three Times—And Still Cut It”: The Deleted Ending That Would’ve Changed Everything

The final moments of Fifty Shades Freed gave fans closure—but what if the original ending had gone darker?

What fans don’t know is that an alternative ending was written, shot, and even edited—only to be cut at the very last minute.

In this version, Ana wakes from a nightmare—not in Christian’s arms, but alone. She goes downstairs and finds Christian watching old CCTV footage of Elena Lincoln (his former abuser). He’s visibly shaken. When Ana asks why, he replies: “Because part of me still misses the control.”

It was meant to show that Christian’s darkness wasn’t fully gone—that the shadows still lived inside him, even after marriage and fatherhood.

Dakota reportedly loved the scene. Jamie, however, was unsure. “It’s not what people want,” he said during post-production. “They want hope.”

The director agreed, but the studio gave the final word. Universal worried the ending would confuse audiences and dampen the box office.

So, the footage was shelved. The version fans saw—Ana with a baby, Christian smiling in the garden—was far more peaceful.

But that original ending? It still exists. And according to those who’ve seen it, it changes how you see Christian Grey forever.
