Although Ghosts season 4’s finale featured an appearance from a literal demon, the Satan-obsessed zealot Patience was bizarrely uninterested in his presence. Now that the season finale, season 4, episode 22, “The Devil Went Down to Woodstone,” has arrived, it is fair to surmise that Ghosts season 4’s cast of characters was a mixed bag. Some guest stars, like Justin Kirk’s Mayor Tad, Gideon Adlon’s Abby Pinkus, or Dean Norris as Sam’s estranged father Frank, got solid subplots with well-earned emotional payoffs.
However, others weren’t so lucky. Mary Holland may have been memorably hilarious in 2020’s Happiest Season, but her humorless Ghosts season 4 character Patience the Puritan never gelled well with the rest of the cast. The overarching gag was that Patience was ludicrously zealous about her Christianity, believing anything and everything that seemed fun to be the work of the devil. Isaac even managed to get her to retreat back to the dirt beneath the mansion by revealing she had committed the sin of watching reality TV.
Patience Had No Issue Interacting With Elias — The Literal Devil
Elias Should Be Patience’s Main Focus In Ghosts Season 4
While Patience had her moments, the supporting character’s hypocrisy was tough to ignore. Ghosts season 4’s finale featured Patience and Elias, Hetty’s former husband who ended up in Hell and became a demon. However, even though Elias literally resides in Hell and has returned to speak to the ghosts on more than one occasion, the spirits were still forced to listen to Patience lecturing them about what was and wasn’t “Satanic.” This didn’t really add up, since the ghosts could just put Patience in touch with Elias, and she could find out directly what is and isn’t Satan’s work.
In “The Devil Went Down to Woodstone,” the Puritan thought the idea of the undead sounded unholy and demonic, hence her hatred of Sam’s vampire novel. She tried and failed to ruin Sam’s book launch in a scene that proved Ghosts can get Patience’s character right, but Trevor was quick to point out that Patience herself is a ghost. As such, it is hard to see how she squares the circle of calling the undead “Satanic,” when she herself exists in the afterlife.
Patience’s Double Standards Made Her A More Unlikable Character
Patience Is More Concerned With Her Perception of Sin Than An Actual Demon
Patience’s status as a ghost alone makes her a hypocrite, since she is just as undead as the vampires in Sam’s novel. However, what really makes no sense about the ghost’s beliefs is her proximity to Elias. Theoretically, Patience can talk to people who have been to Hell, like Elias, any time. As such, there’s no question about what’s “Evil” or “The devil’s work” when she could just ask a literal demon.
Since Sam didn’t know Elias was a demon until it was too late in the Ghosts season 4 finale’s ending, it is possible that no one informed Patience about the existence of the demon. However, this seems strange since all she does is impinge on the fun that the rest of the characters are having by warning them about the devil.
Ghosts Season 5 Needs To Revamp Patience (If She Ever Comes Back)
Mary Holland’s Character Deserves A Fresh Perspective In Season 5
The spirits could, pretty easily, just put her in touch with Elias and tell her to take her problems straight to the devil. Patience’s finale plot hole hints at her season 5 arc as Holland’s character may finally chill out if she returns in Ghosts season 5.
The Ghosts guest star may finally learn the truth about Hell, find out how inaccurate her warnings have been, and finally learn to relax for the first time in the hundreds of years since her death.
Already, Ghosts season 5 has set up with a lot of potential payoffs and call-backs throughout season 4, but giving Elias a bigger role via his contract with Jay means Patience is almost sure to meet him. In the process, the Ghosts guest star may finally learn the truth about Hell, find out how inaccurate her warnings have been, and finally learn to relax for the first time in the hundreds of years since her death.
