My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997)
Mulroney tackled the role of Michael O’Neal alongside heavy hitters Julia Roberts and Cameron Diaz in My Best Friend’s Wedding. The movie was a huge hit and solidified his place as a solid rom-com leading man.
About Schmidt (2002)
Mulroney played waterbed salesman Randall Hertzel in About Schmidt, starring Jack Nicholson and Kathy Bates. In a 2010 interview with Backstage, the actor said it was “fantastic casting.” He added, “But it felt like a stretch to me, and it felt like perfect casting to the director (Alexander Payne), so I went with his take on it.”
Friends (2003)
Mulroney had an arc on Friends in the show’s ninth season, playing Gavin Mitchell, who dated Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) briefly. After the guest starring role on Friends, Mulroney took a long break from television and focused on films.
New Girl (2012 and 2018)
The actor played Russell on New Girl in 2012, a love interest for Zooey Deschanel’s character Jessica Day during the first season. He also returned to play the character in the seventh and final season.
Crisis (2014)
The actor starred in the NBC action thriller TV series Crisis, playing ex-CIA analyst Francis Gibson, who was betrayed by the government. The network canceled the show midway through its first season.
Station 19 (2018)
Mulroney played Greg Tanner, who was Ryan Tanner’s (Alberto Frezza) father, in a multiple-episode arc of Station 19. The ABC description of his character noted, “He’s sharp witted, very perceptive, wickedly smart… and he can charm his way into and out of almost any situation. He hasn’t always been on the right side of the law, which really affects him… especially in the eyes of his son, police officer Ryan Tanner!”
