Virgin River: This First Look at Season 6 Confirms a Major Theory About the Final Cliffhanger
No release date yet? No problem. Virgin River Season 6 just dropped a major clue about what Everett was supposed to tell Mel in the Season 5 cliffhanger.
Given that Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos hinted that Virgin River Season 6 would be released by the end of 2024, which was later confirmed by star Alexandra Breckenridge, it’s pretty surprising that no release date has been announced yet.
While details have been largely kept under wraps, fans did get one big clue. Season 6 Episode 2 will be a flashback to the fictional town in the 1970s, following Mel Monroe’s parents when they were younger.
Combine that with what we know from the end of Season 5, Part 2, and what Everett wants to tell Mel becomes clearer than ever… something about his family life has been kept under wraps.
“First Look at Callum Kerr and Jessica Rothe in Virgin River Season 6.”
What exactly this means remains unknown. Fan theories suggest that Mel may have a sibling she’s never met, that Everett may be related to other Virgin River characters like Doc, or that a darker truth involves Mel’s mother, who passed away before Season 1 began.
According to showrunner Patrick Sean Smith (via Deadline), the new episodes will explore “who Everett Reid is, his past, what his connection was to Virgin River when he met Mel’s mother, and also what that connection is today; Everett’s relationship to the town as well as to Mel.”
Callum Kerr and Jessica Rothe have been cast as Sarah and Everett in the flashbacks, set in 1972. At the time, Everett is an aspiring songwriter living out of a humble Volkswagen van.
He meets a hitchhiker named Sarah – yes, you guessed it, Mel’s mother – and the two discover what life has to offer together. Knowing the addictive TV series, what they discover will have direct consequences for Mel in the present.
Not only has Sarah barely been mentioned in the new series, but Everett’s existence has only been revealed in the most recent episodes. With this much creative freedom, the showrunners can make Mel’s family secret as big and dramatic as they want… but it’s already clear that whatever Everett wants to say will change everything.
The official synopsis for Virgin River season 6 reads: “Set against the backdrop of Mel and Jack’s romantic spring nuptials, this sixth season promises new twists and turns, fraught love triangles, delightful wedding turmoil, and the secrets of Mel’s father’s past that will introduce us to the magic and mystery of 1970s Virgin River.”
Contrary to what fans initially thought, Netflix is still considering giving Sarah and Everett their own spinoff series.
Virgin River season 6 is set to release in late 2024. In the meantime, check out our list of all the shows to stream this month so you don’t miss out on what’s new.
