Netflix is showing no signs of slowing down on one of its most dependable original dramas. Before a release date has even been announced for Virgin River Season 7, the streamer has officially renewed the fan-favorite series for an eighth season, Variety confirms.
This early renewal continues the show’s pattern of pre-premiere pickups — Virgin River was also renewed for Season 7 before Season 6 had even dropped in October 2024. It’s a strong vote of confidence from Netflix, and one well-earned: Virgin River remains one of the platform’s most consistent performers.
According to Netflix’s internal viewing stats, Season 6 spent four weeks on the Global Top 10, reaching a high of 9.2 million views in Week 2 — a strong showing for a drama that has quietly become a streaming juggernaut since its 2019 debut.
Inside the World of Virgin River
Adapted from Robyn Carr’s bestselling book series, Virgin River follows Mel Monroe (played by Alexandra Breckenridge), a nurse practitioner and midwife who moves to the remote Northern California town of Virgin River to start fresh after personal tragedy. There, she meets Jack Sheridan (Martin Henderson), a former Marine turned local bartender — and eventually, her husband.
Season 6 saw Mel and Jack finally tie the knot, while Mel also uncovered long-buried secrets about her father’s connection to the town back in the 1970s. In a milestone for the series, Martin Henderson also made his directorial debut with Season 6, Episode 8, titled “Going Overboard.”

What’s Ahead in Season 7 and Beyond
While plot details for Season 8 remain under wraps, Season 7 is expected to pick up where Season 6 left off, with Mel and Jack adjusting to married life and laying the foundation for their future. Meanwhile, longtime residents Doc and Hope continue navigating health challenges and town politics — hinting at both personal and professional shakeups to come.
Netflix has confirmed that two new characters will be introduced in Season 7, expanding the series’ already rich ensemble and possibly hinting at future storylines that could carry into the newly greenlit Season 8.
A Legacy Drama for Netflix
With its eighth season, Virgin River officially becomes Netflix’s longest-running English-language original drama, a rare feat in the ever-changing world of streaming television. Its staying power lies in its deeply emotional storytelling, picturesque setting, and a cast of characters viewers have come to care about like family.
For fans, the message is clear: More heart, more healing, and more Virgin River is on the way — and there’s still plenty of story left to tell.
