Virgin River: “It was a lot of tears”… Alexandra Breckenridge (Mel) reacts to the tragic twist of season 6
The star couple of Virgin River returns for a heartbreaking season 5 on Netflix! In these new episodes, the fan-favorite character, Mel Monroe, once again goes through a terrible ordeal that did not leave her interpreter indifferent.
Beware of spoilers! Season 5 of Virgin River is now available on Netflix, enough to put an end to the long wait for fans since the finale of the previous season. As usual, the romantic series does not spare our favorite characters in these new episodes (read our review). The heroes must sometimes weather harsh storms to finally aspire to happiness in the fictional American town where everything always ends up being known. However, we wonder if the various protagonists of the series will one day be able to live a peaceful life, far from the dramas and fires that ravage their lands at the beginning of this fifth season. As you can see, Virgin River is not used to sparing the emotions of its fans, any more than the actors and actresses of the popular show who sometimes have a hard time accepting the sometimes radical choices of the writers.
Virgin River, season 5: a painful ordeal for Mel and Jack
Viewers will have to prepare to say goodbye to some of their favorite characters in this new batch of episodes, while welcoming new faces. But above all, they will witness, helplessly, the tragedies that Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge) and Jack (Martin Henderson), the fans’ favorite couple, are going through. One in particular. While the city is in the grip of violent fires, the young woman, who has already experienced many tragedies, will suffer again. If this double episode makes us worry about all the characters of Virgin River, the writers have decided to make Mel undergo a new ordeal. While she returns to work at the clinic to help her neighbors who suffered during the fire, Mel has a miscarriage. Despite her pain, she decides to get back to work without showing her sadness or her condition. It is only at the very end of the episode that she collapses while announcing the news to Jack. After losing her baby with Mark, her late husband, and several years of unsuccessful attempts, Mel had become pregnant with Jack in season 3. However, the writers once again decided on a tragic outcome for the character, which angered fans. A drama that did not leave her interpreter indifferent.
“It was very difficult for me”, reacts Alexandra Breckenridge
For her interpreter, the subject of fertility is a central theme in the series. “I felt like it was an important story to tell,” Alexandra Breckenridge told Netflix’s Tudum about filming Virgin River in 2022. “Not everyone has a miracle baby. So, talking to a friend of mine who had struggled with fertility, it felt like we could talk about it in an honest way that women who have been through it would appreciate. But it was very difficult for me,” the Virgin River star said. Will this misfortune help shatter Mel and Jack’s dream of starting a family? No, according to Martin Henderson, who suggests that the couple may well find another way to do so. That’s hinted at by the end of the first part of season 5, which ended with a shocking revelation about Mel.
