Virgin River fans slam ‘super corny’ storyline after season 6 synopsis released
Netflix has just released a synopsis for season six of Virgin River – and some fans aren’t keen on an upcoming storyline.
Plenty of fans are excited for Virgin River season six after Netflix released a new synopsis teasing what’s to come. However, some viewers are worried one plotline in particular might turn out to be “super corny”.
The new synopsis reads: “Against the backdrop of Mel and Jack’s romantic spring wedding season, this sixth instalment promises fresh twists and turns, escalating love triangles [and] delightful wedding drama.”
Furthermore, season six will delve into “uncovered secrets from Mel’s father’s past which will transport us to the magic and mystique of Virgin River in the 1970s.”
It therefore seems that, while the Netflix show will focus on the future of Jack Sheridan (played by Martin Henderson) and Mel Monroe (Alexandra Breckenridge) in its upcoming season, it will also focus on Mel’s parentage.
This comes after Mel was finally reunited with her biological father Everett Reid (John Allen Nelson) during the series five Christmas special. Now, fans can expect to travel back to the 1970s to see Mel’s late mother Sarah (Jessica Rothe) and biological father, Everett (Callum Kerr), in a series of flashbacks.
Netflix is introducing the recurring characters while also considering expanding the Virgin River universe with a spin-off prequel show that would follow Sarah and Everett’s origin story.
Taking to Reddit, fans expressed their concerns about the plot potentially becoming too cheesy in season six.
One fan wrote: “It’s kinda really lame that as it turns out, somehow Mel’s mom and dad met in Virgin River, the very same town she, amongst literally thousands of towns in the state, picked after her husband’s death.
“Especially given that this was never mentioned before in terms of her coming there because her mom had always talked about this town as some kind of foreshadowing etc. So it is just a bit too on the nose and soapy.
“I have not read the books so not going by that but this entire storyline about her finding out her father is not her real father and now the Virgin River connection and all is just very General Hospital/Days of Our lives.” (sic)
Another fan chimed in: “I have to agree. I love the show. It’s a comfort show for me, & I will keep watching but that story line isn’t one of my favorites.” (sic)
A third wrote: “I agree. I was super disappointed they made that decision to throw that twist in there. It’s super corny.”
One more added: “I don’t really care for the biological father storyline, it’s so out of place and unnecessary.”
However, others seemed excited by the new plot development, with one fan enthusing: “Looks like we’re getting that spinoff, looking forward to S6, hopefully it’s coming before the end of the year.” (sic)
While an official release date for season six has not yet been announced, the first five seasons of Virgin River are available to stream on Netflix.
