Virgin River fans are criticizing the Netflix show’s “serial drama” storyline ahead of its highly anticipated sixth season.
Based on the books by Robyn Carr, the series follows Mel Monroe (played by Alexandra Breckenridge) as she moves to an idyllic small town in Northern California after a tragedy.
After settling into her new role as a registered nurse and falling in love with former Marine Jack Sheridan (Martin Henderson), Mel soon realizes that life in the town won’t be as easy as she thought.
Mel and Jack’s story has attracted a loyal fan base season after season, who have been drawn into the personal dilemmas as well as the many unexpected twists for the other residents.
But has Virgin River gone off the rails in recent years? Fans have debated the questionable quality of some of the show’s latest storylines.
While they admitted that they still “love the show” and will watch the new season when it finally comes out, they had some major issues with the changes it made to the original novels.
“I’m reading book 5 of the Virgin River series, and oh my god, the show has completely ruined the books!!!!” the post continued.
“For anyone who reads the books, I think you can relate. I don’t understand why they deviate from the books so much.
“There are over 20 books in the series with countless ways to create stories and the books do it so well.
“There are a lot of plots in the TV series that are taken from the books but taken from other characters in the books and put into the characters in the show and it makes the show too dramatic like a TV series.”
One particular storyline from the latest season had this viewer pulling their hair out as Mel finally reunited with her biological father, Everett Reid (John Allen Nelson).
“The final straw for me was season five when Mel found out her mom was having an affair with a guy in Virgin River and that guy just happened to be there and Mel just happened to be in Virgin River for her job,” they wrote.
“I mean really? That makes it so soap opera-like.”
Several other fans took to the comments section to agree with the criticism, though admitted that they’ll still be watching when the sixth season finally drops.
“Yes, Mel’s dad storyline was super cheesy and unnecessary. But I’ll still watch it lol,” one viewer said. “I’ll have to buy some of the books.”
“Yeah, I love those books!” another said. “I’ve watched the first episode so I don’t like the way the show’s plot has been built up.
