Virgin River fans baffled by ‘whiplash’ inducing flaw in season five
Virgin River season five saw the residents of the small town deal with new relationships, health scares and a forest fire – but fans were left baffled by one aspect of the show
Fans of Virgin River have expressed their confusion and frustration over a perplexing aspect of season five, with one viewer confessing it caused them “whiplash”.
The hit Netflix show tracks the life of nurse Mel Monroe (played by Alexandra Breckenridge), who relocates to a small town following a personal tragedy and swiftly develops feelings for former Marine Jack Sheridan (Martin Henderson).
Upon her arrival, she secures employment at the local clinic managed by Vernon ‘Doc’ Mullins (Tim Matheson) and encounters his spouse, the town’s mayor Hope McCrea (Annette O’Toole).
Throughout the five seasons and two festive specials to date, Mel has become entangled in an array of town scandals, emergencies, and even criminal activities, discovering that small-town existence is far from dull.
Season five escalated the drama as townsfolk navigated new romances, health alarms, and a forest blaze – leading one viewer to suggest things were becoming overwhelming, reports the Express.
“Why is everyone jumping from one relationship to another?” they queried on a recent Reddit thread.
“None of the main characters are allowed to just be single for ONE MINUTE even after a breakup.
“Haha getting whiplash from the quick jumps between people in relationships/situationships.
“And it’s supposed to be a small town! Where are all these eligible dating prospects popping up from!”
Jack’s sister Brie Sheridan (played by Zibby Allen) exemplifies this rapid romantic progression, as she quickly moves on with Mike Valenzuela (Marco Grazzini) following her split from Dan Brady (Ben Hollingsworth).
In the latest Virgin River updates, Colin Lawrence’s character Preacher has been forming a close connection with firefighter Kaia Bryant (Kandyse McClure) even uttering the words ‘I love you’ early into their budding relationship.
One viewer expressed concerns specifically about Preacher’s storyline, remarking: “Preacher is the main one I’m thinking of, he just seems very passive, like he is fine to date any woman in his proximity for 5 minutes.”
They further critiqued, “And he’s just so unaffected when things don’t work out. I do like his character, I just have been unimpressed with the writing/plot for his relationships.”
The same sentiment extended to other characters’ story arcs, “This also happens with Brady, Brie, and Lizzie (Sarah Dugdale), even Jack and Mel at the beginning. No one seems to resolve one relationship before falling into the next one.”
Compounding the confusion, another fan chimed in about the show’s pace: “Especially considering that all of this happened within one year!”
Amidst the rapid developments of Virgin River which have unfolded before Charmaine (Lauren Hammersley) has had her baby, fans find it challenging to stay abreast of the ongoing romantic turmoil.
