The blockbuster romantic fantasy of Stephanie Meyer’s YA novel series Twilight is preparing for its next evolution as an animated series. The project was confirmed during a Q&A for the Morgan Stanely media conference Tuesday by Lionsgate Vice Chairman Michael Burns.
Word of a Twilight series (presumed live action) started spreading in April 2023. Details for the toon adaptation have yet to be announced.
The story of Twilight centers on high school student Bella Swan, who moves from Arizona to rainy Forks, Washington and meets a mysterious, beautiful student named Edward Cullen. By the time Bella, with the help of family friend Jacob Black, realizes Edward is one of a coven of vampires (albeit “vegetarians”), the two have fallen fatalistically in love.
The first Twilight book was published in 2005, followed by three more in the core series released through 2008 and followed by the gender-swapped Life and Death: Twilight Reimagined (2015) and Midnight Sun (2020), which reframes the first book from Edward’s perspective.
The five-film “Twilight Saga” adapted from the books between 2008 and 2012 — starring Kristen Stewart as Bella, Robert Pattinson as Edward and Taylor Lautner as Jacob — grossed more than $3 billion in global box office altogether.
