A fan theory suggests that Twilight’s protagonist, Bella Swan, is actually half werewolf. Here’s what the theory says and if it works.
Even though The Twilight Saga came to an end many years ago, fans have continued coming up with different theories in rocks of explaining plot holes and more, and one of the wildest ones suggests that Bella was actually part werewolf. Vampires and werewolves are some of the most beloved creatures in pop culture, and as such, they have gone through different versions across different media, though none can compare to what Stephenie Meyer did in Twilight. The book series was published between 2005 and 2008 (without counting Midnight Sun, which came out in 2020) and was an instant hit with readers around the world, who got to meet a different type of vampires and werewolves.
The vampires in Twilight differ from traditional ones in many ways, mostly that they can survive sunlight but their skin sparkles under the sun, and each vampire has superpowers unique to them. Werewolves are also different as they are not even referred to as such, instead being called “shapeshifters”, as they can turn into wolves at will, without the full moon shining above. These characteristics were obviously kept when the Twilight novels made the jump to the big screen between 2008 and 2012, with the fourth novel, Breaking Dawn, being split into two movies. The protagonist of the novels and movies, Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart), was often trapped between these two worlds as her boyfriend and later husband Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) is a vampire and her best friend Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner) is a werewolf , but a fan theory suggests she was more like her best friend but she didn’t know.
As mentioned above, vampires in the Twilight universe have powers unique to each one, such as mind-reading, inflicting pain, or changing the emotions around them, but all those involving the mind were of no use on Bella. Among the things that caught Edward’s attention when he initially met Bella was that she was the only person whose thoughts he couldn’t read, and he was not the only vampire whose powers didn’t affect Bella (Jane, from the Volturi, couldn’ t use hers either, so she couldn’t inflict pain on her even if she tried). It’s later revealed in the Twilight series, when Bella turns into a vampire, that her power is to shield herself and those around her from powers that affect the mind, but that hasn’t been enough for some fans, who find this particularity to be one of the clues at Bella being a werewolf. Vampires can use their powers on humans but not werewolves, so Bella’s shield might not have been doing the job alone.
Another reason the author(s) of the theory shares is all about Bella’s pregnancy in Breaking Dawn, as many still wonder how a vampire and a human could have had a child. The theory explains that Bella’s werewolf gene could have helped her get pregnant, and it’s also a slightly less complicated explanation for why Jacob imprinted on her daughter, Renesmee, who is a vampire/human hybrid, and it’s odd that a werewolf would imprint on a vampire. vampire. Of course, this theory has many points against it, starting with the werewolf scent, which any vampire could have easily identified. Another big question this theory leaves is where Bella got the gene from, and just like the previous point, the Cullens would have picked on their scent.
There’s also the fact that Bella had a mental shield, which isn’t something left for speculation nor that can be denied, so Bella really couldn’t have been a werewolf. Bella started the Twilight series and saga as a human and ended it as a vampire, though it’s fun to imagine how different her life would have been had she turned out to be half-human and half werewolf.
