Ever since his first appearance in Season 1’s “Off the Books,” which was one of the more notable hours of the first season (full of various Supernatural references), Russell Shaw has become one of Tracker’s breakout characters. With only two episodes of the show to his name, Russell continued to make a profound impact on Colter’s life even when he was off-screen, and remained a fixture of the series going into Season 2. Of course, with Ackles busy with shows like Countdown and The Boys (the latter of which is ending soon), Ackles has been extremely busy. But the moment he becomes available again, the CBS program ought to consider swooping him up for a multi-episode arc, hopefully in Tracker Season 3.
While Russell may not be series regular material (though that could certainly change after a compelling multi-episode arc), he could easily be featured in a number of back-to-back episodes as a recurring character. Tracker fans everywhere would certainly eat it up, and it would fall a bit more in-line with the original Jeffery Deaver novels on which the show is based. Of course, part of the reason that we want Ackles’ return is because the chemistry between him and Justin Hartley is always off the charts. Watching Colter and Russell work together (despite their differences) is always loads of fun, and challenges both characters to move past their preconceived notions of one another. And, with Russell around, the show could easily dive a bit deeper into the government conspiracy angle last teased in Season 2’s Russell extravaganza, “Ontological Shock,” which is something Hartley has expressed interest in.
But even more relevant now is that Mary Dove Shaw (Wendy Crewson) may be the one responsible for the murder of their father. If there’s anything that would spark Russell to return home to Echo Ridge or at least meet up again with his younger brother, it would be clearing his own name and seeing justice done for their father. It would be great to see the brothers reunite with their sister, Dory (Michelle Roxburgh), as well, and Season 3 may just be the best time to bring them back for a longer, more meaningful story.
A Scene-Stealing Debut That Fans Can’t Stop Talking About

Fans lit up, social media exploded, and suddenly, people who weren’t even watching Tracker before were tuning in just to see him. So here’s the million-dollar question: Why isn’t Russell Shaw already a bigger part of the series?
Who Is Russell Shaw in Tracker?
A Rough-Edged Yet Relatable Bounty Hunter
Russell Shaw isn’t your typical side character. He’s gritty, unpredictable, and sharp-witted. But underneath the rough surface, there’s depth—a man with a history, personal demons, and his own moral compass. Played with effortless charisma by Jensen Ackles, Shaw immediately commands attention.
The On-Screen Magic Between Colter Shaw and Russell Shaw
Their chemistry is fire. Colter Shaw (played by Justin Hartley) meets his match in Russell—equal parts ally, rival, and emotional mirror. The dynamic between the brothers opens up storytelling lanes that the show hasn’t fully explored… yet.
Why Jensen Ackles Is the Perfect Fit
Ackles Brings Star Power and a Loyal Fanbase
Jensen Ackles isn’t just a solid actor—he’s a phenomenon. After 15 seasons of Supernatural, leading The Boys, and his recent stints on Big Sky, fans follow him everywhere. His presence alone brings eyeballs and energy. Shows don’t just cast Ackles for fun—they cast him because he delivers.
His Performance Adds Grit and Gravitas
Ackles has a rare talent: he can make even minimal screen time unforgettable. His portrayal of Russell Shaw wasn’t just good—it stole the show. From sharp one-liners to moments of raw vulnerability, he balanced humor, intensity, and emotion like a pro.
What Russell Shaw Brings to the Tracker Universe
Expanding Colter’s Backstory
So far, Colter Shaw has been a bit of a mystery. Russell helps unlock that. Their shared past, family trauma, and divergent paths create an emotional depth the series sorely needs. With Russell around, we get to see Colter not just as a lone-wolf tracker, but as a man with history.
A Perfect Foil and Emotional Counterpart
Russell’s unpredictable nature challenges Colter’s more calculated style. They contrast each other perfectly—like iron sharpening iron. This kind of relationship doesn’t just spice up episodes; it fuels story arcs that keep viewers hooked.
Fans Are Begging for More Russell Shaw
Social Media Is Obsessed
The moment Jensen appeared, fans went wild. Hashtags like #MoreRussellShaw and #AcklesOnTracker trended across platforms. TikTok edits, fan theories, and tribute reels flooded timelines. The message was clear: we want more.
Ratings Spiked After His Episode
Let’s talk numbers. The episode featuring Russell Shaw saw a noticeable bump in ratings. Coincidence? Highly unlikely. Producers can’t ignore the math: Ackles = attention.
Why Making Russell a Series Regular Is a Smart Move
Boosting Character-Driven Drama
Tracker thrives when it leans into emotionally charged moments. Adding Russell as a recurring or regular character would up the stakes. He’s unpredictable. He’s personal. And he forces Colter to confront parts of himself he’d rather ignore.
Opening Doors for Multi-Episode Arcs
Russell Shaw isn’t a one-and-done kind of character. He has history, motives, enemies, and probably a past we haven’t even touched. Whether he’s helping Colter or going rogue, he could headline entire arcs.
Potential Storylines Featuring Russell Shaw
Flashback Episodes to the Shaw Brothers’ Past
Imagine digging into their childhood, family secrets, and the events that drove them apart. This emotional backstory could deepen the main narrative while providing space for Ackles to shine.
Bounty Hunter vs. Tracker Rivalry
Picture a season-long arc where Russell and Colter compete for the same bounty—with different methods, motivations, and consequences. It’s a goldmine of tension and brotherly drama.
Redemption, Betrayal, or Both?
What if Russell isn’t all hero? What if he’s hiding something? Maybe he’s working with someone Colter can’t trust. Maybe he can’t be trusted. The gray areas make for unforgettable television.
What Critics and Insiders Are Saying
Critics Praise the Chemistry
TV blogs and critics have been vocal: the Ackles-Hartley pairing works. It’s magnetic, natural, and layered. Few guest stars make this kind of splash.
Industry Buzz Suggests Expansion
There’s growing speculation in entertainment circles that CBS may explore a spinoff or recurring role for Ackles. Given the fan reaction and media attention, it’s a logical next step.
Could Russell Shaw Get His Own Spinoff?
The Demand Is There
The appetite exists. Between Supernatural alumni and new Tracker fans, there’s a huge built-in audience ready to follow Russell anywhere.
Exploring New Territories
Russell’s character could anchor his own bounty-hunting series—grittier, darker, more off-the-books. With the right writing team, it could become a companion hit.
CBS, Are You Listening?
The Time to Act Is Now
Momentum is everything in TV. And right now, Jensen Ackles’ Russell Shaw has momentum. Waiting too long could cool fan enthusiasm. Make the move while the hype is hot.

And Jensen Ackles has once again proven why he’s one of the most beloved actors on television. So let’s give the people what they want: More Russell Shaw. More Ackles. More Tracker magic.
