Tracker Season 2 Sets Up a Multi-Episode Arc for Jensen Ackles
Good news Tracker fans, as season 2 of the CBS hit will feature a Shaw family reunion! Learn more here!
Tracker is CBS’s first show of the truncated 2024 season, debuting right after the Super Bowl. Justin Hartley plays Colter Shaw, a man who tracks everything from lost items to missing people, crossing the country to help others. The show was an immediate ratings hit and was quickly renewed for a second season.
A big part of Colter’s backstory is his complicated family. His father was a professor who suddenly moved his family off the grid and taught Colter and his brother Russell survival skills. When their father was found dead at the bottom of a cliff, Colter believed Russell pushed him, creating a rift between them.
In season 1, Colter reunites with his sister Dory (Melissa Roxburgh), a college professor wary of learning about his father’s past. He then meets Russell (played by Supernatural veteran Jensen Ackles), who denies any involvement in their father’s death. That’s the last we see of either sibling, but it looks like season 2 will feature a family reunion.
Colter’s siblings will be in Tracker season 2 Speaking at the Television Critics Association’s 2024 summer press tour, Hartley and executive producer Elwood Reid confirmed that Ackles will return for season 2 as Russell.
“We’ve got him,” Hartley said of Ackles. “He’ll be back,” but he didn’t say how many episodes he’ll be in. Reid did confirm that there will be “more than one episode.”
“It’s like family. When we text him [he says], ‘Tell me where and when,’ and he shows up. That’s the kind of guy he is.”

Meanwhile, Ackles has been confirmed to be joining the Prime Video series Countdown. It looks like the two could be making some guest appearances on the show.
It will be interesting to see their return as Colter and Russell leave behind a lot of the ambiguity from their dark pasts to find out what happened to their father. Russell is said to be on his own mission and could drag his brother into another mess. The dynamic between the actors is great for setting the tone for the show. It’s great to have Dory back because she’s not into this exciting life but still smart and determined, which balances out the two brothers.
It’s unknown how many episodes Ackles or Roxburgh will be in with their other series commitments, but it will be interesting to see the three Shaw brothers go on a unique road trip together as season 2 looks to dig deeper into Shaw’s past, what happened to his father, and still deliver the great drama that made Tracker such a big hit.
