Tracker Season 2 Set for Early Premiere on CBS, Surprising Fans

Tracker Season 2 is coming to CBS earlier than expected. The second season of the hit action drama will premiere on October 13 at 8 p.m. ET.

According to Variety, Tracker was originally set to premiere on October 27 after two NFL games. However, the network has changed its mind and moved the show up two weeks later. The Justin Hartley-starring drama will serve as a prequel to the Big Brother season finale. Crime drama The Equalizer will also air earlier on October 20 at 9:30 p.m. before returning to its regular 9 p.m. time slot on November 3. CBS has released a promo image revealing the first official look at Jensen Ackles in his next TV series role.

Tracker is based on the 2019 novel The Never Game by Jeffery Deaver. Adapted for television by Ben H. Winters, the series follows tracking and surveillance expert Colter Shaw (Hartley), who makes a living helping private citizens and police locate various individuals. The extended storyline focuses on Colter trying to solve the mystery surrounding his father’s death. His brother, Russell (Jensen Ackles), was initially a suspect, but was later cleared.

The main cast also includes Robin Weigert as Teddi, Abby McEnany as Velma, Eric Graise as Bobby, and Fiona Rene as Reenie. Winters and Hilary Weisman Graham serve as showrunners. Tracker’s first season quickly established itself as a quality show, drawing 6.9 million, 7.1 million, and 7.4 million viewers for Episodes 2, 3, and 4, respectively. The series premiere, which aired just after the Super Bowl, drew 18.4 million viewers.

Ackles will reprise his role as Russell Shaw when Season 2 debuts in October. The news was confirmed by Hartley while introducing Tracker at the Television Critics Association summer press tour. “We’ve got him, he’s coming back,” the actor said. “We’re having fun with it, it’s a great story.” Ackles will appear in more than one episode, meaning his character will likely be part of a multi-episode storyline.

“I’ve worked with Jensen before, and Justin’s friends with him,” said showrunner Elwood Reid, referring to their work on the ABC drama Big Sky. “It’s like family. When we text him [he says], ‘Tell me where and when,’ and he shows up. That’s the kind of guy he is.” Ackles debuted as Russell Shaw in the penultimate episode of Tracker Season 1, titled “Off the Books.” Based on the novel by Jeffery Deaver, Tracker is an action-drama series created by Ben H. Winters for CBS. Traveling across America in his RV, Colter Shaw is a lone wolf with a troubled past who spends his time helping solve mysteries and police cases in every town he visits.
