Despite their electric chemistry, Tracker season 2 may close the door on a romance between Reenie Green (Fiona Rene) and Colter Shaw (Justin Hartley). Rene is one of Tracker’s most charismatic cast members and a great match for Hartley’s character. Colter invited Reenie to stay with him for a few days in the season 1 finale, but she turned him down, marking another memorable moment for the friends. While there was interest in seeing them together, Tracker season 2 made up for the romantic deadlock between Reenie and Colter with an even better replacement.
Tracker season 2 is in the books. Aside from Robin Weigert’s departure from Tracker, there were strong returns from the cast, including popular characters like Rene’s Reenie and Jensen Ackles’ Russell Shaw. The supporting characters are all part of Colter’s team on Tracker, assisting him in his operations. They met when Russell appeared in the penultimate episode of Tracker season 1. Russell’s next appearance in Tracker season 2, episode 2, “Ontological Shock”, actually created a love triangle, with Reenie at the center.
Despite the chemistry in Tracker’s historic first run, the possibility of a romance between Colter and Reenie is slim. Hartley mentioned Reenie and Colter’s romance when production on Tracker season 2 kicked off in July 2024, almost completely shutting it down. The actor has cited that the heroic qualities that make Colter so brave would be broken if someone was home waiting for him. However, as Tracker season 2 progresses, it seems Colter has another reason for not committing to Reenie: he has plenty of other sexual partners.
Tracker season 1 cast Colter as a playboy when he hooks up with a local cop in Klamath Falls. They initially have a tense relationship in Tracker’s first episode, but Officer Amini (Paniz Zade) softens up to Colter when she realizes he’s not just after money. The pair are seen waking up in Colter’s Airstream bed together after a case is over, implying that things are getting intimate. In episode 6, Tracker introduces Billie Matalon (Sofia Pernas), a reward-seeker and another romantic interest. Then, season 2 just introduced Camille Picket (Florina Lima), Colter’s longtime romantic partner.
With all of her romantic interests in Tracker, Colter and Reenie can’t be together because the rewarder isn’t ready to commit—at least not yet. Reenie is aware of the danger Colter is in, and the chaos in his lifestyle appeals to her. She repeatedly notes in season 1 that Colter and his work are more exciting than her life, and she welcomes the chaos, even putting herself in danger for Colter on a few occasions. Ultimately, Reenie and Colter are great friends. Combined with their chemistry, they have all the makings of a promising romance. However, Tracker still has other plans.
Instead of pairing her with Colter, Tracker season 2 gives Reenie the chance to fall in love with Russell Shaw. The story builds on the love triangle introduced in Tracker season 1, episode 12, “Off the Books,” when Ackles made his debut as Russell. The Shaw brothers met Reenie when she bailed the brothers out of jail, and he was immediately relieved. Unlike Colter, who had not actively pursued Reenie, Russell began courting the easygoing lawyer after being smitten by her clever antics. By the end of the year, Russell even contacted Reenie to join him on a beach trip to Buenos Aires.
Although Reenie declined the offer, Tracker season 2 continued the romance (including the love triangle). Russell told Colter in “Ontological Shock” that he had spoken to Reenie, which made sense, since the lawyer called him when Colter went missing. It was clear that Colter was jealous that they were still in contact despite him not having a romantic relationship with the lawyer. The plot will continue in the near future when Reenie finally accepts Russell’s offer, agreeing to
