Tracker Season 2 Character Departure Explained and Its Impact Tracker showrunner
Elwood Reid has finally explained how the show will be writing off original character Teddi Bruin. In August, it was reported that Robin Weigert would not be reprising her role as Teddi in Tracker season 2. The Emmy-nominated actress, recognized for her roles in Deadwood, Big Little Lies, and the 2022 horror film Smile, has been with the CBS show since its first episode, but no explanation has been given for Weigert’s departure. This has led to much speculation since Teddi’s wife Velma Bruin (Abby McEnany) will still be a part of the Justin Hartley drama when it returns in just a few weeks.
In the Tracker season 2 trailer, Reid revealed to Entertainment Weekly that Teddi and Velma have separated. The showrunner and executive producer shared that Velma will have to deal with feelings of abandonment and overcome them. Read the full details below: [Velma] and Teddy are separated. Velma is struggling with abandonment in some way, and she will overcome those feelings.
Additionally, Reid also talked about Velma’s upcoming storyline with Reenie (Fiona Rene). Read the details below: Both women, as they go through some things in their lives, will be able to lean on each other and get on each other’s nerves.
While there has been speculation that Teddi and Velma will split or potentially divorce, the confirmation from the showrunner is new. It comes after details about how Velma and Reenie would share more scenes together were teased in the season 1 finale of Tracker. By helping Reenie set up her new law firm, Velma could be dealing with the unexpected breakdown of her relationship with Teddi.
On the plus side, the breakup storyline gives McEnany a more meaningful presence. The star and creator of the widely praised comedy series Work in Progress, which has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, was reportedly overqualified for her brief scenes in season 1, where Velma and Teddi briefly counseled Colter Shaw (Hartley). The change suggests she’ll have more prominent roles in the Tracker cast.
Weigert is a talented actress, stealing scenes in Smile and Deadwood and holding the screen opposite Nicole Kidman in Big Little Lies. Understandably, Tracker couldn’t capitalize on that much more, given its focus on the mystery of Colter’s father and the weekly missions.
Tracker is based on the novel The Never Game by Jeffery Deaver.
There’s an argument that the CBS hit should just recast Teddi because the character is so new. But hopefully, Reid and fellow executive producers Ken Olin, Ben H. Winters, and Hartley are plotting an interesting path forward after losing their first original cast member.
